Flyball yesterday

Weight pull, Protection, Agility, Flyball... you name it!

So yesterday was our first private flyball class. OMG SHE DID SO FREAKIN' WELL! Even the instructor was shocked/impressed! She asked me what we've been doing in our time off, and I felt really dumb saying "nothing." But we hadn't. I had really slacked off. But by the end of class yesterday, she was going over one jump, hitting the box, catching the ball, and returning back over ALL FOUR. That's a really big deal! Susanna thinks she'll have the entire course down really quickly now and then we can introduce distractions. That's where she'll fall to pieces.

I'm just so excited!!!!! I really need to get a pic of her in her new flyball harness. It's quite pretty on her!

Flyball is sometimes called the drag racing of the dog world: You have 2 teams, four dogs per team. It's done relay race style. Dog one races over four jumps, hits a box that launches a ball, catches said ball, and carries it back over four jumps at which point the next dog goes. Whichever team is fastest, wins. It's so fun! It's so FAST! Really phenomenal teams can get all four dogs done in about 16-17 seconds. Blows my mind. Go to Google and type in flyball and you'll be able to find some videos. Animal Planet also did one of the Ultimate Dog Championship shows on it.

Thanks! :D My instructor swears Inara will be able to compete against the BC's and make a good showing of it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. How cool would it it be to have the only pit on the team, and said pit can WHOOP on the BC's asses! Love it.

The new trainer is suggesting we do fly ball with Birdie too. I am just on the fence cause I want to do agility with her. (I crawl around so I don't fall down)

Inara ran the whole course on Saturday!!! I was so excited - I was jumping up and down and cheering. I felt silly, but my instructor was just as excited!

Ellie, the only class being offered was not by my instructor who I trusted. Inara had a couple "incidents" in class where she flew right by me on a recall and went to other dogs. No harm done at all (well, her face got scratched), but it made me nervous. So the instructor doing the group class said she already has another pit in there like that and doesn't want two. So my instructor (do I need a flow chart?) offered to do individual sessions with me to get Inara trained for the sport w/o distraction. However, now that she has the basics down, it will be time for distractions soon. But she's made so much more progress in two 45 minute private sessions than she did in six one hour sessions! I also purchased a fabulous flyball harness with a nice big handle so that she can't zoom right by me anymore!
