Who do you report this to?

Postby iluvk9 » October 11th, 2006, 6:16 am

A small, non-profit, private 501c(3) no-kill shelter has gone from "wonderful" to "stealing from the dog's mouths".

At least 3 of the paid workers and 10 volunteers have left because they realized the Director is embezzing the donation money, taking donated dog food home and using the non-profit status to buy things for personal use. :x The feral cat program is also being affected with cash donations being taken.

While no one has actual proof, I think there has to be some agency to report this disqusting, illegal, travesty to. I have not been involved with them for quite awhile, but I would gladly write the letter or make the call. :beatComp:

Their BOD consists of family members who may or may not be involved.

Whatever state agency oversees the shelters -- possibly the Dept of Agriculture or call the head office of that state's Humane Society. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

Since the non-profit status is involved, try the IRS, too.

if it's an IRS recognized nonprofit, you can also report to the charities bureau of your state's AG office.

Oh thats horrible!!!

Its people like that who give rescues a bad name and then people question what adoption fees are used for and say we are charging too much. ($150- when you add up spay/neuter, crate, supplies, food, and shots... we actually come out negative most of the time)

People like that suck!

It is a state approved/IRS approved "non-profit", so I will try those avenues. Thanks.

You are right, Ellena. It WAS a reputable rescue and had a great name for many years.

I am just surprised none of the paid workers who quit are reporting it, because they were innocently involved in check writing, signing for supplies and the like.

I have no qualms in reporting this mismanagement. I would rather be wrong than let it continue at the expense of dogs (and cats :shake: ) who are literally getting food taken out of their mouths.

Having worked for and been the director of a non-profit in the past, I would say the first thing would be to alert the board of directors (BOD). When my BOD started going defunct I had to jump ship to cover my own arse.

Whether they want to be involved or not, the BOD is responsible for the oversight of the agency and will become involved in this mess at some point - like it or not. I would send a certified letter noting the allegations - which they are, allegations - and advise them that if this matter isn't addressed/investigated/resolved within the next 30 days they will be reported to the IRS and other governing bodies (this would include whatever agency in your area oversees shelters).

Give them a chance to rectify the situation - perhaps even outline how/what should be changed. I can guarantee you that once the IRS is involved, they'll be like a pit bull on a pot roast :D with ALL of the BOD members for a very very long time. Not only on a professional, but personal level as well.

Only reason I wasn't comfortable contacting their BOD is because all of them are family members.

And a dysfunctional family, at that. :jerry:

Your family members or the directors? :D Just kidding. They may not like it but if they're on that board and responsible for reporting to the IRS they may just have to offer up and sacrifice the director to save themselves. And think about all the fun and mayhem that will ensue. All the better for when they make it on Jerry.

You may be right about them wanting to save their own tails. Thanks.
