I have VPI but haven't needed to use it yet...I looked at several and it seemed to cover the most for the best price.

Thanks! Any info would be super helpful! I spoke with my vets financial advisor yesterday and she said that they don't bill insurance it's not like medical for people. That you have to pay upfront and then your insurance company is responsible for reimbursing you. Any info about this as well?

I've worked at several vet offices over the past few years and yes that'st true here. The owners are responsible for billing the insurance company and getting reimbursed.

That's how VPI works. You pay up front and then get reimbursed for like 80% of it. I have an empty credit card reserved in case of an Inara emergency.

Thats a good idea. There is some kind of care card you can get but it has 28% interest on it!!!!! Yikes. I guess that's the price we pay. Anyway I will look into this AVI? I can't remember the initials of it. Thanks!

I have accident insurance for Oscar, I've kept that even though I now work at a vet.'s and get a discount, even with the costs being less, antifreeze poisoning or something of that sort is NOT cheap to fix.
I would definately recommend it if you have more then one dog or animal. I remember a client who had 2 dogs and had just spent a ton on one when the other got sick with antifreeze poisoning, they had to choose between their dogs and have the poisoned dog put down, what an awful choice

one thing to consider, is that insurance is gambling, you make a bet in the form of consistent payments that something will happen.

In canada, I've had success with Pet Plan, who paid me out when Oscar had an abscess that formed from a piece of speargrass, it took weeks to get it out, cost me about $450, and I got it all back minus a $50 deductable, that made the insurance worth it for me right there, since I'd only had him on it for 2 years and it had paid for itself (his injury fell under the laceration category, since the initial cause was a laceration from the speargrass).

I had looked into VPI but for the 3 dogs it is $900 a year without vaccination and routine care coverage. If you add on vaccination and routine care it is $300 more a year for all 3 dogs. I guess when you weigh the options of something horrible happening it is worth it. But it is a huge nut to crack each year.

Depending on your credit rating and the amount you charge, you can get up to 6 months with no interest.
