I might have to go undercover.....

Postby Sarahdee » October 2nd, 2006, 11:25 am

A friend of mine called to ask me to report her neighbors.
They have 2 pits and just got another one.
She said everytime they are let out in the backyard they are fighting eachother. And its not playing. They are actually bleeding. The owner will come out and pick up one dog and shake him by the collar until the other dog lets go and then drag him into the house. She said the kids taunt them and she is afraid they are going to kill eachother or hurt someone.
So this morning I called the cruelty investigations department and reported them. They didn't really sound to interested, but they said they would check it out.
She's going to keep me updated. She said she has called the cops numerous times, but they do nothing.
I might have to go undercover and takes the dogs out of the yard when they aren't paying attention.
what do you guys think?

I think you better be very careful, that is a GOOD way to get shot and/or dog bit.

yes your right....I don't think I could actually go there and take the dogs, but If I do witness something I will definitely keep making phone calls to the police until they do something about it.

I think that would be your best bet, I'd hate to see you get in trouble or hurt. The leader of DOgs Deserve Better was jailed for letting someone's dogs loose not long ago. Her intintions were good but the way she went about it was not.

Rule number one of "going undercover": Don't tell anyone!

Rule number two: if you're planning on doing something illegal, regardless of your intentions, don't announce it on an internet message board.

Call and report them for dog fighting. That's a felony in most states. If it is investigated (and it should be) the fresh wounds on the dogs should at least prompt an investigation.

ETA: dog fighting is illegal in all states, but it is not a felony. my error.

I agree with Michelle. Say they are dogfighters and get them out to take a look.... then something will be done, even if they arent dog fighters.

take some pictures, if you can, of these dogs in action. Then, call the appropriate agency to deal with it. If you don't get anywhere, then, and only then, would I consider taking the dogs myself....

ANd IF you DO take these dogs, PLEASE DO NOT POST IT HERE. Liability, prior knowledge of a crime & all that. Thanks.

well, I reported them yesterday morning, the lady didn't sound too concerned. I know they are really busy. But I'm going to wait till this weekend to see if they went to check it out.
Then I'm going to do what you guys said. Go and take some pictures and then call the police with the evidence.
I don't think it would be wise for me to go there. Not a good neighborhood and a little white girl like me would probably stand out pretty well. I don't think i would get away with taking the dogs. I think most of the neighbors are scared to call the cops or they wouldn't have called me to report it.
thanks for the help guys, I never thought of taking pictures.

You were right the first time. It is a felony in some states including NY.
