Very graphic photo Warning - Hershey's Surgical site

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby msvette2u » August 2nd, 2006, 7:15 pm

We discovered a swelling on Hershey on Monday evening, and yesterday morning took him in to the vet - she recommended some benadryl (thinking it was an allergic reaction to some insect bite perhaps) and some Keflex. By last evening it was growing increasingly red and irritated and HARD.
This morning, it was BRICK red and horridly hard and obviously infected.
We took him in this morning and the vet inserted a needle and drew out some red, pus filled fluid. She said she'd have to keep him and lance it, and drain it.
This is how it looks now. Poor Hershey :(

The original neuter incision is on the testicals, this is further foward on his body than the original incision.

Oh poor man...does the vet have any idea what it is?

Just a really bad infection :( He was neutered last Thursday.

It started like this---swelling on the right side of his penis

Oh My! How horrible. Poor Hershey. Does it have something to do with the neutering?

We are not sure - the swelling isn't in the scrotal area which is where the original neuter incision is.
The vet just wasn't sure. He's on antibiotics and this incision can't form a scab for 7 days anyway...so it can drain. :(

That's the incision to clean the infection. She said it was a huge deep abscess. The incision is slightly open in one spot, other than the tubes, to drain...

Little too coincidental that he was just neutered on Thursday and he develops an infection in that region right after~likely related.

Poor little guy.

He's a tad better this morning, at least attitude wise. You'd never know he was sick unless you looked underneath
He's on Keflex so hopefully this won't recur.
Red apparently had a dog that had this same condition (it was an adult though), Tux, and it turned out the vet had accidently removed lypmh nodes instead of testicle and it swelled like this. I'm thinking that's what happened in this case too.

I HOPE that is not the case with the poor little guy. Tux had quite a few problems. Poor baby :(

He is doing really good. The incision is looking GREAT (thank God!)
We washed him off because he was outside for a bit and he yowled the whole time. He is a TALKER. This puppy is seriously so pretty/handsome, but then again they all were... lol

wow, that incision site is NOT pretty :(

This puppy is, what, 3 months old?

What crappy luck for such a little one :(

Did they give you any pain control for him?

10 weeks old, or 11 weeks now. No pain control. It only bothers him when we put on the hydrogen peroxide, other than that he romps and plays like nothing is wrong. He is crated or in the kennel run to reduce his activity a bit or at least modify it! We have to put the peroxide a few times a day on to keep the site open and draining. It really looks good, I am very impressed that he's healing so well. I believe they'll remove the drain this coming week, and barring setbacks he should heal up good.

I'm surprised they are having you use HP....

typical abscess care that I know usually suggests warm water compresses...

perhaps because this one was deeper though, the care is different :|
