Help! My friend is feeding Beneful...

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby Magnolia618 » July 14th, 2006, 11:15 am

First rule of thumb... Anything that you can get at a grocery store is very low quality food.

Canidae is good, and also inexpensive. It may seem more expensive than grocery store food, but you feed less (Less fillers) so it lasts longer. Thats not to mention the money you will save on vet bills in the future!

You should also look into raw. It is the best thing for them and it is very inexpensive. I found chicken for 39 cents a pound the other day!!! Maggie eats one pound a day, Trey eats about 2.

I sure wish I could say I spent less on raw than premium kibble...chicken is cheap, as well as canned fish, but beef (which I can't even feed to Vicki anymore because she is allergic), rabbit, and lamb gets pretty pricey.

A few people suggested Purina.. but we were at the store investigating other dog foods tonight, and noticed that Beneful is made by Purina.

Yep, she tolerates it really well!
Her last episode of diarrhea was pretty scary. Lots of blood in her stool, I freaked out. I had been keeping a food diary, but took her to the vet again to get another fecal just to be sure.

Her allergy test results last year had shown her to be allergic to beef, but I had read how unreliable they were sometimes. Guess this one was right. As soon as I stopped giving her beef, firm stools again, and she was good to go. I am also going to start giving her more veggies, because in the past they really seemed to help her as far as her stool, breath, etc.

Yep, Merrick is great.
Timberwolf is also good. Satin loves it, we just switched her to it a couple months ago from Wellness. Timberwolf smells good and to me it smells fresh. She doesn't need a lot of it per day because it is a high quality kibble so it lasts longer.

Can I get any of these in the pet store?

why is Iams bad?
that is what the humane society fed him and told me to keep him on that.
but if he doesn't like it, I have to find something else.

any foods in pet stores are crap... you are better going to like a pet food store that is a specialty store, like a private owner.. iams is filled with junk, just read the ingredients...

the higher quality food you feed him A. the less he will poop as he will digest more food
B. you wont go out every 2 weeks and pay $50 for a bag of iams
C. Your dogs skin , breath, etc will get softer, cleaner, better

Yes and yes. :) There are several threads in this section about raw feeding. Look them over & ask any questions you have!

The raw feeding regimen is still controversial. Even though those who feed it swear by it, some still don't 100% agree with it. There are a couple threads on here that were debates about it.
You could either feed raw or do a high quality kibble such as Canidae, Timberwolf, or Merrick- there are a few others that people have said are good. These kibbles you won't find at Petco or Petsmart but at a specialty-type, smaller pet store.

I like this chart, for comparing products. Of course they rate themselves as the best, but it gives you an idea of what to look for and what crap is in the popular brands.

Smart dog! Iams is poor quality food sold at a high price for what's in it...

Try to get Canidae, it's a great food for the price.
