photo help

Hi - I am BRAND new (happy to be here!) and can't find info on or figure out how to add photos. How do I add one to my "bio" when I make posts (is that an Avtar -sp?) and to add one in the body of a post - do they have to be pre loaded on a web site first? I couldn't find a "photo 'how to'" and will be embarrassed if I overlooked it.

Please get me started!
