Jenny's BMs

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby msvette2u » June 26th, 2006, 2:19 am

OK I think this is the first time I've written about dog BM's but I have read other people's, with great fascination I might add ;)
So I'm hoping someone can help me some with this...
Jenny poops SO weird! She assumes the "position" outside, and then she starts to strain, you can see her legs sort of shake. But instead of anything dropping, she starts sort of walking away still in the position. Then finally a soft-ish bit will fall out. She keeps sorta walking around all hunched up and 2 -3 more pieces will fall out. I don't think I've seen her poop one WHOLE piece, it's just bits. But it isn't hard and dry, it's fairly soft yet formed. It just breaks off in short pieces(???)
Now, this AM she was eating and before she got done she must have felt the urge so started right here in the living room. We scooted her out the door and picked up the piece that fell out.
What's up with this? Anyone else's elderly dog do that? Is it because she's an older dog or what!? Any ideas?
It's a PAIN to clean up, btw...

I'll ask the vet. I added pumpkin to Copper's food for a few weeks and it never made a difference. I don't know what kind of additive could "loosen" them up...and she drinks a ton of water. I even had Jeff check her blood glucose the other day, thinking she may have diabetes! It was 81 - perfect for a dog...

Some dogs just like to walk and poop. It sure makes it harder to clean up when you gotta look for all the little pieces!

My neighbor has a Sheltie that will walk and poop -- it's hilarious.

she sounds kinda like reba.

reba doesn't walk and poop but she has developed bowel motility problems in her old age . . . we supplement her with lots of high-fiber stuff, including oats soaked in water, green beans, kashi cereal, canned punkin, and carrots.

add lots and lots of fiber to this girl's diet and see if that makes a difference.

She is a picky eater and barely eats the Blue we give her. This dog is very spoiled and ate off owner's plates her whole life it seems. She practically crawls in our plates at meal time! I'll try the veggies with her. Are they good cooked too? I bet if it came off our plates she'd eat it ;)

try canned green beans, warmed up and put into her food, or you can cook the oatmeal and give it to her with her food, it's good for her as long as you don't put milk or butter in it, just make it with water.

oats are supposed to be a great fiber source, so maybe the oatmeal will sit will with the little princess, hehe!

I am dogsitting a GSD right now that does that....soft pieces, not solid...could be the food he's on (I didn't pick it out and I cringe to feed it to him)....
