I'm taking the plunge

This forum is all about training and behavior. Everything from potty training to working titles!

Postby mnp13 » June 23rd, 2006, 11:57 am

Last night was my first night training with Lisa, I'm giving marker training a try with both Riggs and Ruby.

Ruby caught on rather quickly "touch the pole get a treat..." Ruby is a pig.

Riggs is a little slower on it because he has zero manners taking food (or toys for that matter) so I have to fix that first. I've done no training with him for about 8 weeks now, so he's way way way out of listening mode which isn't helping either.

I'll keep you updated!

Ruby likes agility, so we may get back into it. Riggs is a "little" uncoordinated, so I'm not sure about him.

Cool, Michelle!

Are you using a verbal marker, or a clicker?

no clickers! (I have a phobia)

I'm making a 'chick' sound, like what you do when you get a horse to switch gaits.

Well, have fun with it. But I'll warn you, it starts as dabbling and turns into full blown marker-training obsession! :D

What is this marker training you talk about? Rory is ok but stubborn (as some of you know) is there a site or book you could reccomned for this. Its not clicker training is it? She didnt respond to well to that and I rather use hand signals, she likes those better. She has done a couple of obediance classes but I'm always looking for ways to improve her obediance!
Good luck to you!

Clicker training is marker training, but marker training is not necessarily clicker training.

If Ruby the slug will do marker training, any dog will do marker training.

Marker training or clicker training....same exact thing, it's just that the "marker" can vary. It's training using a conditioned positive reinforcer.

Can I be nosy and ask what your dog didn't like about clicker training?

I ... am ... not ... doing ... clicker ... training ...

I am doing marker training. what is the difference? I've met more than my share of "clicker nazis", I've never met someone who does "marker trainig' who is nearly that rabid.

Yes, it's semanitcs... but they are important semantics!!!
