This is probably really simple, but we didn't cover it in either of my obedience classes? How do I teach Inara to stand and stack?

I don't know about the stacking part....

but

have her sit, then say "stand" guide her into it with a treat, and praise. Once she gets that, have her move into it from a down as well (remember to do lots of sits and downs alone so she does not anticipate the stand). Once she has learned it from both a sit and a down, you can start to move your hand away and create a hand signal, or just move away, praise when she holds it and you change position.

If you use a correction, I have used both a leash pop on the horizontal (if she goes to sit or down from the stand) or a quick "hey!" with a hand at the hip joint, and of course praise when they are back where they're supposed to be.

I'm not sure how to teach the stack as Nisha automatically does it when I give her the command to stand, and I didn't really care to teach it to Sacha...but to teach the stand, I actually did it at feeding time (in fact, doing some training as they're running full force to try to eat has really helped to speed up their responses to my commands b/c they know the sooner they do what I say, the sooner they get to eat).

So, i put their food down. I go to open Sacha's kennel, she waits until I tell her okay to come out...as she is running, I tell her down...she drops. I tell her to sit, she sits...then I said "stand" and when i said it, i put my hand under her belly (towards her you know what), and gently put some pressure. I didn't physically lift her, just gave a nudge...when she would stand, I told her stand, stay, stand. If she held it for me, I'd release her to eat. Once she had that, I'd start to step away from her....no corrections if she sat, just my hand on her belly.

I did the same with Nisha....you'd be surprised how quickly they picked it up when they knew eating breakfast/dinner counted on them doing the behavior!!!!

You only need a regular stand for obedience. The stack is just really for the show ring though the stand stay is pretty much the same thing. In a stack the dog needs to be standing with the legs and body positioned correctly in the stand stay as long as they are standing it doesn't have to look pretty so to speak

This should help

Rocky had trouble with stand. Our first class was to show them by putting hand under belly while saying stand stay. Did not work for Rocky. Other class was to have treat pull hand foward like the signal and lure to stand. Saying stand stay continue to give treats while dog stays in stand. This worked well for Rocky. Learned a stand stay quick when given treats.

Since they didnt teach us in class and the tummy touch didnt work for Rory I tried it on my own, its probably a bass ackwards way but my girl caught on. I would be standing infront of her with her treat and she immediatly sits down (she thought that was what I was going to ask of her so she just does it, brat) I sit down to and for some reason everytime I would stand, she would to, I think cause she thinks I'm going somewhere. So I would sit infront of her, say stand as I would stand and giver her the treat when she followed suit. I know, not one for the books but I try to be resourceful!

Heheheh, I'm envisioning the crazy look Inara would give me if I began sitting/standing/sitting/standing!

Yeah tell me about it, thankfully Rory was at that stage where I couldnt sneeze without her in my face so she followed everywhere. I guess if I tried to do it now she'd think I was crazy. ha ha!

If it works, it works :|

I think its pretty inventive that you thought of that all on your own AND followed through and were successful with it.

Oscar would also probably give me a crazy look :lol3:

It's just one of those things where I thought about what really motivated my dogs. There isn't a whole lot besides mealtime....I wanted to use that to their advantage....

I've even changed it up some for the puppy....now I am feeding her entirely from my hands...and she has to do something for each bite....

Yeah, success. I hate it when they look at you like they want to do what you want them to its just a matter of communicating in a way so that they know what you want from them.....if that makes sense, haha! Woo hoo, keep up on it!

I taught mine from both a sitting position and from a gait and with both a verbal and hand signal. I can switch between the verbal and hand and do not use both together once they understand what is expected

From sitting I gave a hand signal and led them with a lead and food then rewarded as soon as they were standing

From the gait I stepped to the side said stand and then rewared which is pretty easy for them since they are already standing inorder to gait LOL

After teaching them the stand we worked on stand stay
