Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

OK, so my neighbor just called to tell me to go up to his house, knock on the door, and wake up his wife, she has to go pick up their daughter at 9:30.
I check on the girls, they are both out back in the field, hanging out. No problem, go next door, wake up the neighbor.
Come back home, and call the girls in. They're not moving. Purple is looking at me, and Hopscotch is standing, her butt towards me.
As I get closer, I see Hopscotch is chewing on something. Grass? NO!!! An effing RABBIT!
I get the two little beasties in the house, grap the poop scoopin' shovel and hoe, and scoop up what's left of the rabbit. Its head, chest and front legs are missing. I give him a fling over the fence. I then venture to the spot, and start a search for the missing body parts, and find the entrails.....I lose my tea and toast, and I scoop them up....funny, my body still wants to lose my tea and toast, even though there's now none left in my stomach. Over the fence the entrails go.
Question....no harm in eating fresh rabbit, is there? :|

Nope, not that I can think of... Maybe they want a raw diet?

But I'd not want to be scooping rabbit guts in the morning, ewww! I think I would have been tempted to just let them finish it and then not feed them that day. Bunny snack! :D

None that I know of, many raw feeders raise rabbits to feed their dogs. I couldn't do it.

Thanks. I didn't think it was anything to worry about, but I wanted to make sure.
The whole eating of the rabbit didn't really bother me, it was the missing head, and the entrails, (obviously).

I have a friend who hunts rabbits with beagles. Occaionally they will eat one. He told me that they will pretty much always get worms from doing that. He automatically deworms them when it happens.

I would de-worm!

The heartworm medicine I give also takes care of other worms, do you think that will be enough?

Yeah that would be my only concern...parasites...I would think a worming should be okay...as far as bacteria or virus'? Dunno...I guess wait and see how they are feeling...as long as they are healthy they should be able to fight off most anything on their own, but I'd keep an eye on them.

The difference between "fresh" rabbit (puke...lol) and raw is that most dogs are fed raw meat that has been frozen first, and thus all of the microbes are killed off...not so with freshies. So yeah...I wouldn't think you'd need to be OVERLY concerned, but just keep an eye on them.

That being said, Molly munched on some unidentified critter entrails (she found him in the old huge field they used to play in, and it was apparently mowed over, thus making identification tricky  ). It was disgusting, and she QUICK-ATE some before I could push her away from it...and was totally fine. Just depends on what the critter has I guess.

I'm sure she'll be fine. They hunt rabbits as sport with Greyhounds out in the midwest area and as their prize they get to catch and eat the rabbit, so I couldn't imagine it being an issue.

I still am getting a little chuckle out of this. Last night Satin dove into the bushes for a huge bullfrog. If she was off-leash she probably would've gotten it and eaten it!
They like to hunt I guess.

General question to all:
Do male and females of this breed have the same prey/hunting drive??
