Minor Successes

So Inara and I had some minor, okay - MAJOR (!) training successes today on our walk. Normally when a car goes flying by she whirls around and gets all jumpy, not really frightened, just wanting to watch. Today I actually got her to just sit still when a car went by! I almost keeled over in shock! And then we've been working really hard on loose-leash walking, and today was her best day yet. I've been slamming on the brakes every time the leash gets taut, and we don't walk again until she makes eye contact with me. She seems to be figuring it out. Tonight I started treating her every time she made unsolicited eye contact so I could teach her that looking at me creates good things. I didn't think to do this until the latter half of the walk, but even in that short time she began practically stumbling over herself watching me!!! I'm so pleased with our progress!!!

Yes!!!!!! Happy for you. Such a great feeling. That was one of my favorite acomplishments loose leash walking. Now if we could just get the darn recall down I would be jumping for joy but Rocky is friggen stuborn. How is Inira doing with recall these days? Let me know if you find a good trick. I plan to do what worked for my dads dog. First I need to find a large fenced in unfamiliar to Rocky area. Then hide and wait till he panics that he lost me. Since he does not seem to care about me running away from him in the yard. If he wants to explore he is eploring.

Don't even talk to me about Inara's recall! :shake: I'm going to have to find a word instead of "come" because we have inadvertently ruined it. It'll happen eventually. She's never off-leash, so it's not my top top top priority. I'm more worried about a solid stay, and loose leash walking.

Ahhhh well we have a problem mostly in our yard. He is on a trolly and usually comes but not if he is busy. So I am trying with a whistle since my son discoverd by surprise Rocky comes running when you blow a whistle. Also would probably not be a bad idea in case he ever got out of the yard he would be more likely to hear the whistle than my voice and claps. Just curious what you are using for a collar. Did you end up with the prong?

We did use the prong for a while - loved it. However, now I'm just using the martingale collar that Noel made. I save the prong for if I'm walking with people who aren't used to dogs (my family) and would not be patient with the stop and go walking. My instructor said to use two different collars, or a collar and a harness, so that the dogs know which one they're "allowed" to pull on, and which one requires loose leash. So she's allowed to pull on the prong, but not her regular collar.

Thats interesting. I have not used a prong. Use to use a choke style in old training class. I too am now using a martingale(no more collar corrections) as well as a harness. I use the harness for long walks or out in public situations. Sometimes I have the harness on but use the collar instead. I feel more comfortable about controll with the harness. Rocky walks very nice but since I have a weak back and shoulder a slight pull at something and it hurts. He is doing quite well with loose leash now. However if just on the collar he tends to ocassionally unexpectedly pull to go see something. So I like hearing that your trainer recommends switcing use of collars.
