"A work in progress."

Weight pull, Protection, Agility, Flyball... you name it!

I wanted to share this training video with everyone. It is a video of Rumble doing some French Ringsport training with Chris and Decoy Shawn Flipp. The training is a “work in progress” and hopefully sometime in the mid to late fall Rumble will be ready for a trial. (I hope Chris and Rumble trial this fall, I can’t take hearing about how much Chris HATES the patterns very much longer!)

While the Ringsport training is a “work in progress”, We wanted to mention what a pleasure it was to have Shawn Flipp here for the afternoon. Shawn is a very safe, skilled and knowledgeable decoy. He is also a gentleman and very receptive to different and new training techniques and philosophies.

Chris and I have known Shawn for many years now and get to train with him very rarely. He gets better and better every time we see him. It is ALWAYS a pleasure to work dogs with him.

Take a look at the video and as always, the video is open to constructive comments.

So the french ring is pretty tough, huh?

How would you guys rank it against to other bite sports?

Damn he is the most agile person I've seen in a bite suit! He made it look easy to make Rumble miss that one bite. Very cool stuff.

It's ranking is unique because it has a unique focus. The decoy has the obligation to exploit any weakness in temperament and/or training. Reason why the decoys have a wider array of movements than their counterparts of other sports like Sch., NVBK, KNPV, RCI, IPO, Mondio, etc.

I only addressed sports. "Real" dog training (Patrol, PP, PSD, Area Guards, etc) or training dogs for real life scenarios can make a good sport dog look bad without proper training. Hope this helps.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the difference between PP and French Ring?

French Ring is a highly well structured sport. Its rulebook looks like a local telephone guide with the yellow pages. Any person titling a dog to it's highest level can be considered one heck of a trainer. Yet there are usually no big surprises for the dog/handler team. Each excercise is the same no matter where you go.

On the other hand PP is more real life like. And in real life you never know how or what you and your dog might encounter. Likewise, PP tournaments are surprise scenarios where you and your dog might see them for the first time. This brings a totally different perspective in training and mental attitude for the dog that must be properly addressed if you want to succeed in it.

Having a good dog is half of the problem. The other half is having a good trainer to take a dog, in any of the afore mentioned disciplines, to title in them. When you have both, the sky is the limit. Although this is simple to understand and see, it can be confusing when looked at abstractly. Like simple obedience. It looks easy .... until you try it! But when you do, that is when you truly get indepth knowledge.
