Puppy update

Everything that doesn't fit anywhere else!

Sorry no more pictures yet. I'll work on that this weekend.

My foster puppies turned 5 weeks old yesterday. I can't believe how much they've grown. They are starting to eat solid food. I put each one of them in a crate today for just a couple minutes with some food. I figure it can't hurt to start introducing the crate early.

Mama Alley is still whiny and needy, but getting better. She's about ready to be done with the puppies I think. I bring her upstairs with me to hang out in the evenings to give her a break. She's starting to learn some manners and how to exist more than 6 inches away from me. She is so naughty though. No one has ever taught her anything and it shows. This morning she stole a loaf of bread off the counter while I was cleaning up after the puppies. I have to remind myself that she is a young dog, too, and I need to be patient with her.

Last night the puppies got onto the wrong side of my laundry room (I have it divided with an x-pen) and had a grand time. They knocked over the food bag and helped themselves and proceeded to poop everywhere. Of course, by the time I found all this when I went back to check on them, they were all back in the bathroom asleep like little angels.

I'm having fun with them, but will be ready for them to leave in another 3 weeks. They may get their first trip outside next weekend if the weather is nice enough.

This thread is useless without pictures!

Are you doing any tactile exercises or enrichment stuff with them?

Pictures will happen this weekend, and internet will hopefully be hooked up later today (I'm posting at work now...don't tell!).

Liz, I haven't done too much enrichment stuff with them yet because honestly, just getting their basic needs met is wearing me out right now. Still better than growing up in the shelter, but I'm hoping to start on some "Puppy's Rule of 12" stuff soon. I may have a couple friends coming over to meet them on Sunday, and if the weather stays nice, they will have their first trip outside if I can figure out some temporary fencing. Two or three puppies I could just let out in the yard and keep an eye on, but I can barely keep track of all 8 in my laundry room.

My boyfriend took individual pictures of them last night (on his phone, so I don't have them to post and the lighting was horrible, so they mostly look like blobs) and I was really sad that there's only two that I feel like I really know (the two naughtiest ones). I hope to be able to start bringing them upstairs one or two at a time to hang out in the evenings as well.

I did start working on sit last night also. I just stood in their room with a handful of kibble and any time one of them sat down, I shoved a piece of food in his mouth. A couple of them seemed like they might actually be figuring it out.

I'm surprised at how much I am actually enjoying them. That sounds horrible, but anyone who knows me knows I don't do puppies. I'll definitely be ready for them to leave in another couple weeks, but I'm also looking forward to getting to know them more before then.

Honestly, I think you're amazing for doing that. I'm pretty sure I'd rather pull my nails out with pliers than deal with a whole litter of pups that young!

Enrichment stuff can be pretty easy...throw in some different challenges in their x-pen (different surfaces, cardboard boxes, tunnels, etc)...or different things to play with (metal objects: keys, bowls, etc; cardboard tubes; plastic bottles; etc)...
