random extremely heavy panting

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby mnp13 » March 18th, 2012, 9:18 pm

Recently, at completely random times Riggs has started panting, and not just a little - loud and heavy enough to wake me up. I've checked his gums, thinking he's in pain but they are normal. His pupils are normal, I go over his body, and nothing seems painful. Squeeze his belly and poke and prod... nothing. Just panting like I just had him out for a run.

Has anyone ever experienced this with their dog?

Rip was panting a lot at the end, due to pain...his was arthritis, so it wasn't anything I could get him to respond to really...but that's where his pain came from.

Usually it's pain/discomfort, and respiratory distress. I'd look into it, anything else odd? Eating/drinking habits, different quantity urinated, anything else out of his habits?

Given his age, if I were in your place, I'd be inclined to check it out.

When's the last time he had a heartworm test? I think inappropriate panting can be indicative of HW.

you're right Liz, but it also could be a lot of other things.

I know, just throwing it as something to possibly be tested for.

oh for sure :) I think what I typed came out wrong.... kind of more like "add that to a list, and then there could be other possibilities". Sorry, didn't mean it to come out negative!

I'd check for pain and heart issues.

Vet next week.

Yes, I agree about the heart issues, there are a few things that run in his lines so it could definitely be related.

I'm bringing him in tomorrow for a chest X-ray. Demo had him in today, but pinning him down for the X-ray wasn't in the cards for today. They are going to give him a sedative when I get there so hopefully we'll be able to get it done.

He had fluid in his treachea, his heart is normal size, but the blood vessels into his lungs are enlarged. He's on antibiotics, a cough supressent and blood pressure meds. The first two are for ten days, the blood pressure stuff is likely long term.

He is currently completely stoned from the injection they gave him, she said it would wear off in about 20 minutes... almost an hour ago.

high blood pressure or low blood pressure? Any chance the cough suppressant is making him sleepy?

High blood pressure. I don't think it was the cough suppressant, but maybe it was. He doesn't get all stoned now though.

Unfortunately, the stuff we're giving him now seems to be conflicting with the supplements we give him for his prostate and he's been having a lot of trouble peeing again. Hopefully that will stop as soon as he's done with all the meds.
