Oh my!!!

Postby pitbullmamaliz » October 17th, 2011, 8:51 am

One of the corrections officers I really get along with at work told me he's going hunting for a week in WV. I said, "I feed my dog raw meat - I'll take any pieces parts/organs you guys don't normally keep!" He said that wouldn't be a problem so I think Inara (and I!) are going to be getting some venison and...wait for it...BEAR.

How cool would that be??? Time to either find a chest freezer for cheap or clean out my little freezer! WOO HOO!

I may be wrong but I thought raw bear was dangerous because of trichinosis?

I would definitely freeze it for a few weeks first. But if they're planning on eating it eventually, surely Inara could, too. :)

Well, it's fine if it's cooked but I have heard that even freezing it doesn't guarantee it's safe to feed raw.

Bear: All bear meat has a very high occurrence of trichinosis. The only animal known to have a higher incidence is Walrus. It is not recommended that it be fed at all, even freezing doesn’t make it safe to feed raw. Since the only way to kill the spirochete effectively is thorough cooking, I personally don’t see the point of even considering bear as a viable meat source.

Funny, right after reading this thread, I was looking to check freezing lengths for my own food to check and see how long my turkey sausage would still be in good quality condition when I read about trichinosis and how it can be frozen out, but under strict governmental freezing procedures and it said that home freezers typically don't do a well enough job, but cooking the meat thoroughly will be fine.

"Trichina and other parasites can be destroyed by sub-zero freezing temperatures. However, very strict government-supervised conditions must be met. Home freezing cannot be relied upon to destroy trichina. Thorough cooking, however, will destroy all parasites."

Then maybe I'll eat any bear meat I get! :)

It's caused by a type of roundworm, if you use heartworm preventative, will that kill them?

Hmmm, not sure about the heartworm preventative thing. I'll ask Brad tomorrow. Cooked bear seems fine so that's always an option!

Benzimidazole dewormers (albendazole, mebendazole) are known to kill trichinosis, but it's not something you'll find in your regular heartworm preventatives. It's more upscale dewormers, and those you get after your animal got diagnosed.

The directions, according to my parasitology book, is to freeze meat in less than 6 inches thick, and freeze it at at least 5F for 20 days, -10F for 10 days or -22F for 6 days... Not sure if anyone has such powerful freezers though, usually they're around 24F no?
I just also read that gamma irradiation also makes it safe. :D

I'll eat just about anything but bear meat tastes horrible. I don't know of anyone who eats it unless they are facing starvation. As for feeding it to canines, aside from trichinosis it certainly doesn't fit into any "prey" category.

Not sure why he isn't taking advantage of the exotic species hunts currently available in OH.

I believe all exotic species have been terminated.
