I just got a call from the SPCA, about some PR stuff. I hadn't been over there in a while, and asked about a big male pit named Tanner that they had been working with. They ended up putting him down due to understandable displacement behaviors.
He learned quick as anything, but could not handle high stress. I believe a lack of exercise and the high stress of the kennel life made it really hard for him to deal with things.
I did not step up to the plate. I was afraid I would want to keep him, so I kept my distance. He was exactly what I would look for in a dog, highly operant, highly driven, and althletic. I just stopped volunteering there, and stuck with PR stuff with my dogs for them.
Had I been on this board at the time I was working with him I would have tried to get him into rescue. He loved people, and loved life, he just couldn't cope with living in a cage.
Hope you are happier now, Tanner.
