Harness Suggestions

This is where to talk about Pit Bulls!

Postby BigDogBuford » July 1st, 2011, 2:17 pm

Sooo, Doogie won't be able to wear a collar now and I need harness suggestions. I have no problem having one custom made and I'd prefer it not be leather.

Suggestions?

I had a Sporn harness when I first got Fergus, it was recommended a pitbull owning coworker. Its has a soft fabric that covers the nylon where it goes into their arm pits as to not aggravate the skin. Worked great until Fergus chewed it up one day.

I still love my Brown Dog Design walking harness.

one thing I learned about Oscar, his harness will make rub marks on his skin. Originally I thought it didn't fit properly, but now I think not. So whatever you get, you might want to get padding or covered - I bought a roll end of fleece for cheap from the fabric store and made a crude cover and haven't seen any rubbing since.

I've found most harnesses will rub PB's.....I think it's because they don't have any fur. I was looking for some sort of cushy padded one. He doesn't pull at all.

Liz's Inara's one looks really really comfy.

I feel better knowing we aren't the only delicate flowers that get rubbed :)

We're trying out two harnesses this week on River; she has had her step-in harness rub bald patches under her arms where she is already pretty bare, but I don't like having her leash hooked to her collar.

One is an Easy Walk, and the trainer has also purchased some felt covering for the under strap; however, we're not cutting the felt to fit yet until we decide if we want to keep it...

The other is a Freedom harness; its under strap is velvet and not nearly as stiff as the regular webbing. It has a d-ring in front and on top. So far I think I like it better, but we're going to try them both over the next several days.

I second the Brown Dog one...Score had one for flyball, and he never chafed from it...and it didn't shift at all. He doesn't use it anymore...but it was great when he did! (he's naughty...he runs flyball naked now!)

I have an ultra cheap one that clips in the back that I use when I tie Riggs out at camp. He doesn't have much fur, but it has never caused any issues for him, he's worn it while he's wet, and spends hours on it running back and forth.

It's a step in one, I have no idea where I got it, but it was less than $10.

It's similar to this one:
http://www.petco.com/product/111902/PET ... -Dogs.aspx
however, his has an adjuster on the front piece as well, this one does not. And this one says "light padding for a comfortable fit" and his is just strips of nylon webbing.

The clip is under the leash rings, so when a leash is attached you can't unclip it by mistake if you grab the back of the harness (or if it does unclip it stays on). However, I did use it when I ran flyball with him, and it unclips very easily without a leash attached, so one completely naked Riggs later, I ran flyball with his leather agitation harness!

Ok, it's exactly like the lupine one:

And here is how it fits him when he's not all wound up in the line:

I have the same harness that Michelle just posted with Riggs. I love it! Toby hasn't had any rubbing, but I'm sure it depends on the dog. :)

That's actually the same harness (the step-in) that River had problems with-- she runs from me if I try to put it on her, so we stopped using it, even with padding. But she's pretty light on the fur-coverage to start with...

Also, if you want just a cheap/non-custom harness to have around if needed, I vote for the H-style Lupine harnesses (not the step-in ones). They have a long chest strap, so the girth strap is far back from the armpits...so it causes less chafing.

My parent's smaller dog is having the same problem...she has developed neck issues, and has to wear a harness too. Trying to get them to figure out how to put a harness on, over the phone...that's super fun. ;)

Dude, I totally sympathize with your parents. Harnesses these days can be ridiculously complicated!

The regular Lupine harnesses (not the step-in) work well. I use them on puppies and young dogs until they grow into the leather harnesses that I use for protection work.

I've also had good luck with a Brown Dog Designs harness. It rubbed Dylan in the armpits when I first got it, but Missy put more fleece padding there for me and I haven't had a problem since.

I've also used this conditioning harness and had no issues with rubbing.

It's funny how the identical product can have drastically different results for different dogs.

Like everything else, it all depends on your individual dog!!

I really like that harness, the shape of it makes it very very easy to put on - I put it on the ground layed flat, and he steps over it, I tell him to stand, then just pull it up and clip. On him, it doesn't rub at all, but he's very stocky and short bodied. You can see in the photo where he's pacing that it sits pretty far back behind his elbows. When that leg moves forward, the strap is not in his "arm pit" at all.

Getting the lupine version of that harness might be a good idea, since they have such a great return policy. If it gives him problems I'm sure they'd take it back, considering they take back collars that are chewed!

Absolutely!

We're liking the Freedom harness so far; the Easy Walk fits River weirdly and everything just flops around where the leash attaches. But the Freedom fits tighter and I really like it; it also has d-rings on teh back, so it'll be good for River's long line, too...

Robin, on the other hand, wears the Easy Walk pretty well. :| All about the dog!
