This is where to talk about Pit Bulls!

Postby RastaPitLover » June 21st, 2011, 4:25 pm

Was at the hospital yeasterday visiting a friend and there was an older gentlemen that bought in his service dog (APBT). We sat in the lounge with a few grandmothers talking about how sweet APBT are & that they get a bad rap. The gentlemen was telling us that his dog was a medical service dog & that he detects low sugar levels in diabetes patient. All of a sudden 3 security guard came in and told him he was crazy for bring a dog into a hospital. It was clearly known that the dog was a service dog. He even had a pass yet they told him to get off the floor. Well the gentlemen wasn't having that & demanded they get their boss...which they didn't. He then called someone who happened to be an Admin. of the hospital. When this happened, 2 of the 3 security guards started feeding the nurses & Dr's on the floor a BS story to tell just incase their boss ask questions. Sadly the people who he was talking to were APBT owners themselves and told them basically they're on their own. To bad i left to see the outcome but i did give the gentlemen's son my number just in case they needed a witness.

I thought i'd never see a Med. service dog...who had on his service jacket & the hospital pass on at the time get kicked out yet a lady told me that a lady bought in her Lab who was also a service dog & they never said anything to her nor told her to leave.

Your thoughts?

I live on Long Island. What hospital? If you would rather send me a private message with the name, please do.

As you know, there are MANY Pit Bull advocate groups on L.I. who would get involved in this if it was known. Even my town shelter, the Brookhaven Town Shelter has just started a program to train the Pit Bulls and get them adopted out. The new Director of the program is also a Pit Bull Advocate.

As for the legality of it all, I am sure when Hoyden sees this (she has a service dog, in another state) she can give her opinion.

I have a friend with a hound mix Hearing Dog, and they tried to kick her out of a restaurant today.

Basically, it's hard to take a dog anywhere, much less a pit bull. It's sad but true. The guy should have held his ground and waited for the police to arrive. John's been known to call the police himself.

I am shocked. I thought you were going to say Brookhaven Hospital.

Then you know that Save-A-Pet in Port Jeff is owned by same woman who is now Director of Brookhaven Shelter. She would not be happy to know about this, should you care to inform her to get the ball rolling.

I am your neighbor. I live 3 minutes from the hospital. :)

John would love to give them a call...and discuss service dogs and pit bulls. He's on a roll lately.

Well nobody called me yet & as far as i know the man was waiting for the Police. As you know Stony Brook has it's own Police and they're not worth a crap!

The Grandmother that were there were also APBT owners yet they said nothing when Security came.

@iluvk9
I haven't been to the Brookhaven Shelter in YEARS. My old Pitbull Buck use to run away alot & ended up there. They loved him! I had to pick him up at least once a month...hahaha. I miss him as he was a great dog. He just had a running away habbit. There was a dog shelter behind the old K-Mart in Middle Isl. so he couldn't help running towards the barking. Oh god, that was like 12 yrs ago.
I've heard of Save-A-Pet but never talk to anyone from there. I take Dubz to the Vet on Rt.112 & the NYS Vet Clinic in Farmingdale. They're ABPT specialist & love him dearly. I think everyone in that building is a Pitbull owner.
Small world :)

I hate Brookhaven hospital BTW. Then again, i hate St. Charles & Mather too. LOL

This was my 1st experience in a situation like this. The guys PB brightened everyone's mood in the lobby including mine. We all read her patches. One said "don't hate the Breed, hate the owner". Beautiful rednose female. Very obedient. It was also a first meeting a APBT service dog. The guy mentioned that they were training his son's PB to be a service dog which happen to be related to the female. And trust me, the guy wasn't letting it go. I also found it odd that he had to pass 2 security booths. I just wished that someone else other then me stepped up for the guy. I hope he gave them hell after i left.

I know what the intended message is, but people really *are* dumb enough to take it literally.

I agree about SBU "police", and Brookhaven Hospital. :) I don't remember a dog shelter behind the K-Mart, but I know there are 2 boarding kennels back there now.

Speaking of kennels (and going a tad off topic)....if you ever need to board, I suggest Quail Run in Medford. Don Sterling and his wife are PHENOMENAL. All breeds are welcome. My Golden, Lenny, who I recently lost, was a biter. Don would personally take him into the kennel and never had a problem with him. He actually told me he has never met a dog with a bigger heart of gold.....which I knew but others rarely saw. My bigger dog, Truman is a bit of a doofus at 140#'s. Don always meets me at the car to help me manage him. He was a Suffolk County Police Dog trainer.

I've run into a few issues, but I ALWAYS stand my ground and I do not back down. When people have threatened to call the police, I invite them to so I can press charges against them for harassing me and interfering with a service dog. I've actually whipped out my phone and called the police for them.

That hospital is clear violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. What I would suggest you do is for you to call AND write to the administration of that Hospital and provide them with a written statement of everything that you saw and heard and include the times, locations as well as descriptions of the security guards and the employees of that hospital. This will give whomever investigates the incident the ability to cross check the stories.

Make sure you point out that denying access to a person with a service dog is a clear violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and should that service dog handler opt to press the matter further and file a complaint with the ADA, the hospital could be subject to thousands of dollars in fines.

That being said, I have taken my dog to the hospital with me more times than I care to count. The only times I had to make arrangements for her were when I had to have radiation for cancer and when they were doing surgery more complex that in office same day surgery.

When I had radiation treatment, the hospital provided the same orderly for every appointment to stay with my dog. They did therapy visits, then ate huge bowls of vanilla frozen yogurt in the cafeteria. (and she gained 4 lbs.) When I had same day surgery, she was in the room with me, laying down out of the way on a mat or on another gurney after she was wiped down with antibacterial stuff and put in one of those wrap around paper dress things.

Wow...you're more trusting than John or me...I'd never let anyone take my SD out and about...I wouldn't trust them not to get my dog in trouble somehow. Nor would I trust anyone to feed my SD, without being right to see what they were eating.

Thats what it is. I use to live in Coventry Manor back then (10 yrs to be exact) & their fence was on the side of the apt complex.

I could never leave my baby with anyone. :( My mother-in-law usually takes him and he LOVES going over to her house. Other then that, someone's always home. I have 4 boys (20, 17, 12, & 10) to keep him busy.
Way off topic but i can't believe those people got killed at the pharmacy. Happy they caught the guy though. I go to that Pharmacy often and that could easily been me or my wife.

Writing the Admin. is a good idea. I know enough people that work there to get in touch with the right people.

What i should've done was record it on my phone. I'm new to the whole andriod thing coming from an old Nextel haha!

I trust this guy because he has sat with her during appointments for at least 3.5 if not 4 years. I think I wrote about it here, or maybe in my LJ. He is this really huge gentle black man that is absolutely great with Birdie. He works in the mental health unit on the other side of the hospital, but if someone needs to sit with her, they schedule so that he can be there.

The first time he sat with her, he sat in the same room and held her in his lap so she could see me while I was scanned. He had a pocket full of dried chicken treats and was a gentle as can be. Up until I had the radiation treatment, he had always been in the room, or just outside the room with her. By the time I had radiation, I was comfortable enough with him to trust him with her without me being there. The only issue I had that my definition of a small bowl of frozen yogurt and his definition of a small yogurt were two different things entirely.

The other reason that I trusted him is because there are very few people that Birdie will willingly go with. She will always go with my daughter, Autumn, Gremlin and my friend Beorn. Sometimes she will go with Mark or my Dad. She was willing to go with this orderly.

You couldn't clip a leash on her and walk away from me. She would literally drag you back to me or lay down and refuse to move. She has done this with Mark and he had to pick her up and walk away from me and she struggled with him.

Okay, so he's not just any old orderly...which is what it sounded like in your original post.

I can't always remember how to use that damn record thing either. Although people around me have a few times so they could vouch for what happened.

The best thing you can do to make sure that this doesn't happen again is to contact the Admin of that hospital.

I am trying to find some case specific material for you to cite, but I've been super busy so I haven't had a heck of a lot of time. I need to reinstall Acrobat reader to view the cases to find the specific case I am looking for but in the mean time here are a few links:

http://www.ada.gov/svcanimb.htm Note that this document specifically states that Hospitals must accommodate service dogs.

Nope. Same one, every visit. She loves him. I thought I posted about him here but I can't find the post. Maybe I posted on FB. I hate that I can't search my FB posts for stuff I want.

Anyways, a bunch of people inputted and helped me pick a nice thank you gift for him after I was done with radiation.
