Frequent horking?

Postby pitbullmamaliz » June 9th, 2011, 8:04 pm

Since switching Inara to raw she's been horking up more days than not. Normally it happens while I'm at work (poor girl comes leaping out of her crate when I open it), but occasionally in the evening/night. It's not yellow bile, it's white liquid and usually a small piece of bone. It's not the actual horking that concerns me, it's the frequency. I figured she would have adjusted by now. It's been a month tomorrow. And I don't remember her having tummy problems last time she was on raw.

Her diet consists of either a full chicken quarter, or half of a chicken quarter with a boneless thigh. Both options come with some salmon oil drizzled on top. She gets a spoonful of peanut butter in the morning with her meds.

She is eating/drinking/peeing/pooping just fine.

I'd be a bit concerned moreso about the bone coming back up (and any potential pokey bits) then the actual vomiting (vomiting = horking, right??)
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

lol Yes, horking is vomiting. :)

The only reason I'm not so concerned about the pieces of bones is because it's normally just one small piece (marble-sized?) that's actually pretty well-rounded off. Not really any sharp edges. And I also know it's pretty common for dogs switching to raw to throw up little bone pieces now and again.

Me too...since I had a bad experience with bones while feeding raw, even little pieces worry me now.

But why she'd be vomiting so much...just odd. Have you tried a little yogurt or something to settle her stomach? Does she get any fiber or veg added in...or is it all meat? When I fed raw, I mixed up a slush of veg and organ meat too...to help lubricate everything.

Try taking a hammer to the chicken before you feed her. If it's consistently a "marble sized" piece, I'm guessing it's the end of one of the bones. Smash the ends and see what happens.

Every once in a while this happens here, though the piece usually seems to be a piece of cartilage or something like that.
