New dog with a new name? *pictures!*

This is where to talk about Pit Bulls!

Postby call2arms » May 16th, 2011, 4:24 pm

So we're still looking for a new name for Fortune. I think it does fit him well, in the sense that he had a bad past (found as a 15lbs stray, caught pneumonia at the humane society and practically died, then pulled through)... But sadly, Fortune in french means the equivalent of wealth, money-wise, more than in the sense of good fortune which is what it is meant for him. Also calling Fortune in french just sounds weird (my niece was saying his name and I was just cringing inside).

So we're trying to find something that fits, but that's sort of bilingual - easily pronunced in both french and english... We're looking into fun names that mean something, and since he was a little hobo, possibly a punk-rock sort of name. lol.

So far on the list, we've got Charlie Brown (I've been calling him brown or brun for fun, as well as poopy-pants)... But Charlie is a pretty common name so I'm not super thrilled. We've also got Mo or Moe (short for mohawk or also Moe from the Simpsons)... and other suggestions by my boyfriend that I'd rather not get into cause they're just plain retarded.

Here's some pictures to help get an idea of his character!

I googled French names for male dogs. :) These are the ones I like, in keeping with the "M" theme: Momo, Mobell, Mico, Marcel, Mignonne.

These are other French names I liked: Brice, Lowell, Bisou, Drogo, and Oden.

He really is adorable. :giggle:

what about the translation for 'up'?

I don't speak french at all and this seems to be one of those words that aren't really translated directly...

but Up as in, "things are looking up", or the direction his life has taken is Up :)

Whoa, busy week at work, I'm back from the dead! lol

I like Mico, and translaing for up... Would be Haut (pronounced Ho), so it's a good idea but sounds weird. Unfortunately the synonym dictionnary does not give good options either.

We've added to the list: Danzig (Glenn Danzig), Iggy (Iggy Pop - like the name but it wouldbe weitd since we're not super big Iggy Pop fans), Bonzo (Led Zeppelin drummer, really like that name)...

Come on punk/music people, I think we're really heading for a "musical" name.

Jack was named like this for Jack Skellington, and Jack Black.

Mmh, some good ones around... We're pondering.

I'm always unsure with the Luckys and Chances and Champions... They seem to collect health problems, to not live up to their names. Once we had a Champion (cat). He was FeLV (leukemia) positive, was paralysed from his hind end from unknown reasons, had cryptosporidium (nasty parasite humans can catch), really bad rhino, and multiple other problems. Yeah. Not that he could overcome any of those with his leukemia. Poor guy.

One of my favorite westerns, is the old 1971 Movie, "The Red Sun". There is a handsome, gambler/gunfighter,,
played by Alain Delon. He is a sharp dresser in black. He deals cards and shoots a gun with his left hand. He plays a great villain. The gunfighter is a Frenchman, and his name is "GAUCHE".
I know the meaning isn't impressive, but "GAUCHE" was one Bad Mofo!
