Not peeing?

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby jcoffey917 » April 29th, 2011, 9:31 pm

My sister just told me that her dog has only been peeing once a day lately. She's a 3 year old English Mastiff that used to get UTIs a lot as a puppy but hasn't had any in a long time. Do you think she might have kidney problems? Or is there something else that might cause her to not be peeing?

Ummm regardless that is totally NOT normal and she should be seeing a vet ASAP.

It's really rare for females to get blocked but if she has bladder stones in large number they could be blocking the urethra therefore not allowing her to pee. If she doesn't have kidney problems now she is going to have them. It isn't normal for the dog to only be peeing once a day.

This completely blows my mind that people don't take this more seriously. If I could only pee once a day you can darn well bet I'd be at the doctor right away.

She called her vet, but he isn't open until tomorrow morning. If he doesn't call her back, she'll go see my vet tomorrow. She was just hoping it might be something less serious than kidney problems. I think it's only been like 2 days.

Only 2 days?! 2 days would be long enough to cause bladder damage if she's producing the normal amount of pee but only peeing once. I have seen dogs in kidney failure stop peeing. But they usually don't produce pee and fluids just build in the body. The times I have seen this has been when the dog has already been diagnosed with kidney issues and is nearing the 'end' of kidney failure.

Peeing issues, or lack of is REALLY serious. Even if she gets by this time with it being a simple bladder infection causing the dog not to want to urinate that is totally not normal. Bladder stuff is nothing to mess with. I just feel really bad for the dog.

There are some things that might be ok to wait in hope they are less serious, but this is not one of them.

Things I can think of off the top of my head that IMO should be seen immediately
-obvious deformity or damage to the eye (anything from pussy green or yellow discharge to visible scratches and more)
-large amounts of blood in stool
-profuse vomiting and diarrhea
-increased or decreased urination, or the same for water intake
-trying to vomit or wretch/gag and not producing or producing very little
-inability to stand
-multiple seizures
-cold temp to touch, or pale or blue-ing gums or mucus membranes
-overdose of medication

hopefully it isn't something serious!
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

That is a good list. It should probably be on a sticky somewhere!

Eye stuff is totally a big one. We had a dog come in with an infected eye, they let it go on for many weeks, the dog was in our clinic for maybe an hour - the eye exploded and they had to transfer to a specialist same day. It was horrible. :puke:

Someone I know almost died last year - urinary sepsis from being unable to pass urine. Constipation isn't fun, but it probably won't kill you... however, when urine backs up in the bladder, it then backs up in the kidneys and then the body just re-absorbs the toxins and you go septic. That will kill you.

I hope she's ok! Please keep us updated.

A) Yes I would def add eye stuff to that list. When I worked the ER phones the #1 rule was "eye = see immediately"

B) I have a (former) friend who went away for a few weeks for work, and when he came back the guys taking care of his dog told him the dog had started having trouble urinating. He said the dog just needed more water. They urged him to go to the vet. Finally he did. The vet didn't like the kidney values, prescribed meds, he said "he just needs to drink more water" and then went away again for work, leaving the caretakers with no meds for the dog since, you know, he just needed to drink more. The dog died, from what originally would have been a treatable kidney infection, because he was too stubborn and bullheaded to seek the help the dog needed AND treat it. Tell your sister to get the dog to the vet. ASAP.

I've really only heard of urinary obstructions in male cats.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Lily is ok! She went to the vet and after running some tests, he said it must be a behavioral thing because there is no problem with her kidneys or an obstruction. When she was peeing, it was a huge amount, so he said as long as it was a normal amount then she should be fine. They're going to try getting her on a very regular schedule and see if she starts going more. Thanks for all the advice!
