I haven't heard of any complications with giving it in my time at the ER vet.
I will say that if you google any medication you'll find side effects listed in studies that are horrible and awful scary! Even something such as antibiotics. The impression I get is that some side effects might not be true side effects and may be just coincidental, much of the time (but not all of the time!)
I sympathize with your worries - Oscar takes a itty bitty dose of Prednisone daily, and there ARE very real issues with that, although none from him this far; my alternatives, however, are to manage flare ups with much higher doses of Prednisone short term(if I could even get him off the dose he was on now - last time we tried he started scratching himself raw) and antibiotics - which seem to make him feel yuck, or Atopica, which could potentially be 1/4 of my monthly income in one medication alone.
So I totally understand.
When you talk to your vet, there may be bloodwork you can run on her every so often to check for any issues that may be starting. At Oscar's wellness checkup in a few weeks I am going to ask my own vet about anything he might suggest for him, test wise.
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.
