Ethics or job?

If there was potential for a job, but it went against your beliefs, but it paid very well (no, not stripping! If only I had the figure...) - would you do it?

I know somebody who went to work for Invisible Fence and she made a killing. But I hate IF and think they're horrible. I don't think I could do it, or SHOULD do it, but people seem to think I'm crazy for not applying for a job I'd be a shoe-in for and could make good money at. Thoughts?

My thoughts are if you don't believe in what you are selling, you will be miserable. Unfortunately, the flip side is we all have bills to pay and need to eat. It's a tough call.

I've worked for the same company for almost 35 years. There have been as many miserable years as not. I make descent money, so I stay. Is it the best situation? No. Would I do it over again? Probably not.

May I ask why you are against invisible fences? You know me and I am a softie for dogs...it's just that someone once said to me: "Either I get the invisible fence or my dog will be maimed or killed by a car in front of my house."

As for the eithical question, I could not take a job that was against what I believed in.

I've seen too many dogs emotionally damaged by IF, to the point where they won't go outside, won't step on grass, etc. And, as the owner of a reactive dog, I HATE not knowing if a dog is outside loose or behind an IF.

If you are selling, I am skeptical that you will be overly successful at it. If you're installing or something, you might do ok.

I work in a job that I don't like and don't agree with. I stay because for my level of education, I make about as much as I can, and my boss is a good boss, despite the fact that doing what she wants can be frustrating. I won't be where I am forever, and I know that. There are most definitely days where it is hard to keep my attitude up.
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

Or they could get an *actual* fence, or walk the dog on leash for bathroom breaks.

Well, of course I suggested that! Unfortunately, the dog is an escape artist (part Husky, I think) and the owner isn't as bright as the dog.

She has had luck with it and after a year or so, the dog doesn't wear the collar and doesn't attempt to leave.

yet.... and when it does, it will likely be dead. I can't tell you the number of "find toto" listings I get that include "wearing Invisible Fence collar" in the description.

My cousin's beagle used to run through their invisible fencing all the time. I think the downside to it is that it gives people a false sense of security. I would be worried my dog would run through the fence and essentially get "locked out".

I have to agree, money is money and if you know it's temporary and could maybe set out a goal IE: you want to work 6mos for this company to make this much $$ then I say go for it. That is if you can handle selling a product you're not a fan of.

I myself know I am not that good of a liar and regardless of the money would have a really hard time selling a product that I have no faith in/don't agree with.

On the other side of things if you did do it, you would have a chance to educate owners a little bit. You could probably give them tips on how to introduce the fencing/the collars/the system etc.

You won't use an e-collar on your own dog, even though you know how to use one correctly... how could you possibly sell e-collars for other people to use on their dogs?

I've had a job that I dreaded every single day, it causes depression, self doubt, and a host of other problems. It's not worth it.

Geez...Like JOYCE would be the one to advocate an invisible fence collar, a shock collar or even a pinch collar of ANY type??? I don't even like when people crate their dogs for more than four hours because I think it is cruel.

Ultimately it is up to you. It depends on how desperate you are for a job right now. I would ask myself some questions. Can you keep paying your bills on what you have coming in now? How many offers have you had? In this economy, at least in my area, job offers are very rare. I know you don't agree with the product but like pleybao said, you might be able to help people who do purchase it to know more about it and how to best use it. The old saying is "it is easier to find a job when you have a job".
These days, you have to do what you have to do to survive. I don't think that any would judge you for doing what is necessary for yourself at the time.

Fortunately I don't get laid off until mid-July so I have time. Money isn't a crunch yet. I'm hoping that since I live in a big city SOMETHING suitable will come up. Like Michelle said, I don't use aversives on my dog, so why would I encourage others to do the same? I think I knew in my heart that I couldn't/wouldn't do it. I guess I just wanted to hear others say I wasn't (or was!) crazy. Thanks for the feedback, all!

Minor point relative to this discussion, but yes, you most certainly do.

Michelle was talking about what will likely happen to your friend's dog as a result of her reliance on Invisible Fence, not criticizing any advice you may have given her.

You're right - I worded that poorly. I avoid using P+ on my dog whenever possible and I do not use correction/training collars.

Okay, that's more accurate.

Joyce, I'm pretty sure that ALL of us here know you probably never even raise your voice to your dogs.
