Memory foam mattress toppers?

Everything that doesn't fit anywhere else!

So I've got this thing where my hands and sometimes whole arms are falling asleep at night and while I work. The doc has me on steroids and muscle relaxers to get the tension and swelling in my neck and back to go down so whatever's being pinched will get unpinched. But I know that once I stop taking this stuff, I'm going to be right back where I started. I'm going to probably go see a DO who specializes in osteopathic manipulation-- kinds like chiropractics, but manipulation of soft tissue to achieve alignment (a hybrid of chiro and PT, from what I understand; still reading up on it). So. I'm trying to think of other things to help. One is trying to maintain better posture at my desk and in the car; when it's time for a new car, I'll get an auto instead of stick shift (I'm in the car about 2.5 hours a day, so that makes a difference), and now I'm re-evaluating my mattress. Adam has occasional back problems too, and I'm afraid the mattress just isn't firm enough.

It has a little layer of memory foam in the Euro top, but you still sink in; when I lay on my back, my shoulders still feel sort of pushed forward. Anyone know if a memory foam topper-- like a 2" or 4" would provide some support? I didn't know if it would just sink down, too, since the mattress is still under there, or if it actually can give it some oomph.

Other suggestions on bed adjustments? The mattress is only a few years old, and wasn't cheap, so I want to try not to spring for a whole new bed if I can help it...

I have no idea...though I eyeball the memory foam toppers all of the time. John does too, but I keep telling him that I think he'd be unable to get out of bed with one. He has a hard enough time with our regular old mattress...I think he'd sink in too much with memory foam. But they look so comfy. I have a memory foam pillow and love it.

I have one of those contoured memory foam pillows; it's time for a new one, definitely, but it has served me well. I'm reading now about latex foam mattresses-- sounds like they're firmer, less "sinking" in, but still soft...

I had ART for the same symptoms. It did wonders for me. Check out their website to find a chiropractor who is certified in it.

Thanks, Michelle-- I started looking into this, too. I'm ready for anything, I just don't want it to be one of those, "have to go see my chiropractor 4 times a year for an adjustment" kinds of situations. I seem to remember you saying you only had to have a few sessions? I got a similar recommendation from a friend here, too.

Looks like there's someone relatively close by...

My son and DIL just got one of those memory foam beds and they love it. She is about 100 pounds soaking wet, so when he turned over in the regular bed, she would flop all over. :giggle: He also had neck aches and this bed seems to be doing the trick.

We finally, after years of tossing and turning and hurting, busted the piggy bank and bought a temper pedic...I will never own anything else. I sleep all night, no waking. I can't tell when Hub gets up and down.

They look like you would sink in..you don't. As a matter of fact, when we first laid on ours we both thought "oh crap we aren't going to like this" because we didn't sink in enough. After two nights, we were totally sold.

The hand and arm going to sleep...I have a similar problem. This sounds stupid, but have your tried wearing a wrist brace to bed? You can get them at Walgreens. Whenever I have done too much computer, or cleaned windows, painted..anything like that, my hands and arms will go to sleep and hurt so badly they wake me. If I wear the wrist brace they don't do that at all.

Thanks for the input !!

I have been wearing the brace to bed most night; I think it helps, but then again, the doc has me on steroids and muscle relaxers, so...??? Who knows.

I found a sports medicine place that has a physical therapist and a chiropractor both certified in ART; apparently, it's very similar to what an osteopath would do, but an osteopath has the advantage of being able to call on all the same resources that an MD could (prescriptions, referrals to specialists, surgeries if needed, etc.). However, the only osteopath I know of in the vicinity who does OMT is in Tulsa, which is an hour and half/hour and 45 minutes away. The ART guys are 20 minutes from my office. So I'll probably start there after I see what I'm like when the meds all wear off. on the other hand, the other bonus in going to Tulsa would be that I could pay an office co-pay as opposed to meeting my deductible first, which is how my insurance treats chiro and PT. I don't know. Pros and cons. We'll see.
