*sigh* off to the vet again

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Just got a phone call - Riggs is vomiting up everything he eats or drinks and has bloody diarrhea. Lovely. Vet appointment for x-rays is at 6:00. I guess he was jealous of Connor getting all the surgeries last year? Let's hope not.

No surgery thoughts coming your way. Hopefully it's a simple HGE, not that it's any fun or cheap to treat but at least there's no surgery involved.

Just back from the vet.

No apparent reason for him being sick, we did a full blood panel and he has Metro to stop the running from both ends. We'll see what the blood work says on friday.

His constant runny eye is due to a plugged tear duct, so he has eye drops for that.

And we drew a rabies titer (after the vet tech told us he was over due and the vet "might give him the shot anyway" even though we don't want it. :rolleyes2: )

bland for the next ten days. yay!

HGE = hemorrhagic gastroenteritis Sorry
Mild cases seem to respond quickly to treatment, most severe cases or cases where people wait too long end up being pretty serious and can even kill a dog. We seem to see it in clusters for some reason. If we have one dog with it we can almost guarantee at least 4 or 5 more cases within days of one another.

Hooray for good bloodwork and and otherwise normal visit! I hope Riggs is back to normal in no time.

Interesting. What are the causes of HGE?

I'm interested, too. I thought it was a variation of severe diarrhea (so could be caused by any of the things that cause that), but thats just my impression, so I wanna see what Dawn says :)

What are the causes of HGE?

Nothing has been proven as a specific cause but there are lots of ideas like a virus, a bacterial component, stress, etc. And certain breeds (smaller ones) seem to be more prone to it.

A dog can develop bloody diarrhea after having normal diarrhea but most HGE cases are characterized by sudden onset of vomiting and bloody diarrhea.
