Alas, this time Tiva's mast cell cancer HAS returned...

Here is where we can discuss canine cancers and treatment options to create a support system for those dealing with the disease.

Postby tiva » January 25th, 2011, 3:20 pm

Last year I posted that Tiva's new lumps weren't mast cell tumor again (here's the thread, with picture: http://pitbulltalk.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=32726.

Alas, this time, the news isn't so good. Tiva now has another MCT, in her front leg, just above the elbow joint. 3 years ago, she had a high-grade tumor and the initial surgery didn't get clean margins. Luckily, it was in her tail, so amputation worked fine.

This time the options will be more difficult, especially given her age (15+). Fortunately, we do have a good vet school and oncology department in Madison WI. Her big appointment there is a week from today. It's a long time to wait--I wish they had an opening earlier.

Wish her luck. She's doing great, otherwise--running around like a young dog, minimal arthritis, lots of energy.

Thanks! Hopefully we can get the new MCT drug, Palliva. It would be a lot easier on her than another surgery. We'll see.

Here she is two summers ago, playing with stick bigger than she is (as usual):

She looks great!

Do you mean Palladia or is there another drug?

Regardless I would be interested to know if it works/helps out. I've read good things about it.

How large is the tumor? We have a pug that is old/crusty, diabetic, gets calcium oxylate crystals, we had just done a second bladder stone removal surgery when he got a MCT. He's also had past surgeries to remove other MCTs. Anyway, our doctor ended up removing it under local, the dog handled it fine. They didn't want to put him under full anesthesia again and it was a pretty quick and easy surgery. Just something to think about if the drug is not an option.
