Samurai's Perineal Hernia Surgery

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby Patch O' Pits » October 16th, 2010, 2:39 pm

About Samurai for those who haven't met him. AKA "SAM the HAM, Mr. BUTT BAM-SLAM" says hi by doing 180 flip in the air to give you his butt to scratch... Yes, he even does this to judges in the show ring. I call him my comic relief. His theme song is "Baby Got Back" because of it. But, with his booty all swollen from surgery still, there isn't any butt scratching going on so Samurai is a sad boy.
Here is a picture of my handsome boy:

Samurai is home recovering from the over 3 1/2 hour surgery he had to have on Monday. It was for a big messy bilateral perineal hernia repair. His prostate and fat had already fallen through though and was trapped.
From the outside and his behaviors you never really would have known anything was wrong. However, I knew something wasn't right.
I noticed a strange puffy area which I should to a different vet who told me it was nothing when I took him in because my vet was closed. Luckily, I have a wonderful regular vet and great vet tech who took care of him & found the problem during his regular check up. Just goes to show not all vets are created equal, so make sure you find a good one.

I should have taken picts of the area after the procedure as it was incredibly painful looking and nasty, so I figured it would totally grossed everyone out.
His butt is all shaved and he has internal and external stitches.
He's still swollen, complaining, and is not happy about being crated. If all goes
well, recovery will take a couple of weeks. He had a 5 day recheck today, and vet said he is coming along nicely, and is better than she expected at this point.

Prayers, well wishes and kind words are appreciated.
Right now I'm exhausted from being up every night to make sure he doesn't lick. I can't put an e-collar on him because he flips out and actually got a paw caught up in it trying to get it off. He is as strong as a bull which of course is a good thing for helping him recover, but not for helping him rest.

Well, I'm totally broke again. Thank goodness for credit cards...
Everyone remember to either keep a spare card for emergencies or a dog bank account. Our dogs would do anything for us; so we need to make sure we prepare and can do things for them too... even when it is tough.

Samurai says, "Hug your dogs and be aware of lumps, bumps and bulges and get them checked. You never know what they might be...."

Aww Samurai :(

What about the inflatable doughnut type collar? That should work for the location...

kind of like this : http://www.amazinghealth.co.uk/comfy-collar.htm

my vet is now selling them which means he's convinced of their affectiveness (though we know not everything works for every dog!), and he is a man of his convictions ;)

good thoughts for both of you. Maybe if you give him a towel diaper and sleep with him on the bed you can get some rest...

Thanks! he has that collar too and I tried three different sizes he can still reach and he ripped one of them apart when I left the room for a minute. He is a determined little bugger LOL
