Anyone like to take a guess... been swelling up for several weeks, looks like it's going to pop :|

Common goldfish, best guess 10 years old.
Outside tank with continuous fresh water flow.
Never been human fed.

My best guess is dropsy, which is an internal bacterial infection... luckily it's NOT contagious, but you will need to treat it w/antibiotics ASAP. Tetracycline is usually very effective, but you need to seperate this fish from the others and keep him/her in a different container while administering meds - if left untreated, dropsy is usually fatal.

Some pet stores might also sell this, but under a different name... you'll have to ask. If you get a script from your vet it'll be $4.00 at Walmart.

I agree with Christine, probably dropsy.

Three for dropsy. Can you get the fish out of there and treat it? If you can I would try treating with Kanamycin and giving him epsom salt baths. If that's something you can do let me know and I'll tell you how to do it.
Dropsy is a tough one. I've not seen too many fish recover from it. :(

Here's the Kana. I may have some here too. I will have to check the expiration on it.

Sorry for all the posts. If the fish is still eating I would try this medicated food. Again I may have this here but it might be fairly old.

Thank you guys for all the responses. These have been in the outside pond for years, and just kind of exist there. The pond needs cleaned in the worst way. It is something we're planning to do as soon as the heat eases a bit. Some of the others have little warty growths, will those respond to the same treatment?

It all depends on what those little warty growths are... Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic and will take care of almost anything bacteria-related.

:rolleyes2: :bitchSlap:

lol I'm just giving my best guess-timate as a non-vet person, based on what has worked for my fishes in the past... I have never heard of Kana, but I'm definitely not opposed to giving it a try.

Whatever you decide to do... do it soon, or the dropsy fish is not going to make it. :(

Well if it gets any medication this weekend, it will have to be whatever Petco can offer.

I don't think they're going to have anything that will help you. I can check mine if you like but it won't get there until mid week at the earliest.

This is their selection on-line... http://www.petco.com/petco_Page_PC_prod ... 24+93.aspx :|

Maybe they offer something else and/or additional products in-store. Fins crossed here in NC!

If I have to wait until Monday, I can get something from the vet. I appreciate the generous offer, though.

Any time. :) If you wants to do something before then you can pull the fish out and do an epsom salt soak.
