Neuter Complications?

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby pitsnok » September 21st, 2010, 8:45 pm

I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with Ollie. Everything was just fine after his neuter until yesterday I noticed what looked like a bag of liquid hanging next to his penis... Boss's Bulbous Glands have been noticeable a lot so at first I assumed it was the same thing...only bigger? It honestly just felt like liquid and was only on one side of his penis.
His incision site looks fine-no abnormal redness or seeping, but today the 'bag' of fluid seems more solid, and I think is a little bit warmish...Not hot by any means, but I think it's warmer than usual. He seems like he might be in a little bit of pain--i.e. he is hesitant about hopping onto the bed, or into a lap...up until now we have had to do all we can to prevent him from hopping on things...so that is kind of a red flag.
Someone has mentioned it could be a seroma, which I understand isn't a very serious problem, but now that he seems to be in pain I am a little more concerned. Does it sound like an infection to you guys? They have been wearing their e-collars at all times while crated up until yesterday, so I know he hasn't been irritating it by licking it.

I am calling our vet in the morning, but I was hoping I could get some feedback as soon as possible as to whether I should be concerned, or call the e-vet or what. I'm just worried!

When I had Toby neutered at a year old, his sack (for lack of a better word) filled up with blood. I took him back to the vet and he explained that it sometimes happened when neutering mature dogs, gave him some antibiotics to be safe and sent us home. It ended up draining naturally which was a MESS. But Toby is just fine now.

Doesn't sound like it's in the same area on Ollie though? That's just my experience with Toby.

Keep us updated!

um, without a picture I'm hesitant to even guess.
Good thoughts, though!

Yea a picture would help but sounds maybe like a hematoma (sp?). Or wait, is this fluid clear?

Could be a seroma or reaction to suture... or... I highlighted/italicised your post, you said up until yesterday? It wouldn't take much licking to irritate the area. We generally say to leave the cone on 10-14 days for dogs who are interested in licking their parts.

I'd definitely have a vet take a peek at it as it could be a reaction to the suture.

There isn't any fluid visible. It's just a sack under the skin.
Suzanne, they are still wearing their cones he just had it off for a little bit. That was after the mystery sack appeared haha.
It shrunk a little bit by last night and I didn't get a chance to look at it before I left this morning but if it is looking like it did yesterday when I get home I'm calling the vet. I feel like it's a seroma, but I need to be sure.

poor Ollie. Having his privates posted on the internet.

This was taken the day before yesterday, but it looks the same. He is sort of leery of putting weight on his back left foot, so it seems like he is hurting again today. Also, the area feels warmer to the touch. I called the vet but the earliest they could get us in is tomorrow morning so we booked that. He is still eating and peeing and pooping normally so I'm not too concerned, but he isn't acting like the playful puppy he usually is.

That crossed my mind when I first noticed Boss's bulbous glands... I'd never seen them before, and then I was like..."uhhh! WHAT did they doooo?!"

Good thoughts from us, too...

Robin had a seroma and we used warm compresses, and she got a round of antibiotics because the vet did a needle aspiration. But we were also visiting the vet every other day for him to check on it.

This is the main reason I'm hesitant to change vets-- they only do walk-ins, so I'm able to run anyone from our crew over there on short notice. Yeah, it probably feeds my hypochondria, but it's good to have the option.

Oh and the vet said he is 9mo to a year old, which is exactly what we thought.
