Goopy eye

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby pitbullmamaliz » August 3rd, 2010, 6:30 pm

For the past week or so Inara's right eye has been goopy. It's clear goop and it doesn't seem to bother her at all. It's hard for me to tell if that eye is squintier at all since it's the one w/o the black patch so it always looks smaller. I took a couple (crappy) pics:

Like I said, it doesn't seem to bother her - no itching, pawing, etc. And even though it looks dark I'm pretty sure it's clear and just looks dark because it's making her hair damp right there.

Thoughts? Is a vet visit in order?

Is she outside/ in grassy areas more now, since you have your own yard?

Faust had some discharge and a squinty eye a while ago... my vet dx'd it as a "slight irritation" and a secondary infection (most likely caused by shoving his head into every patch of grass in our yard and "poking" himself in the eye accidentally :rolleyes2: ), and prescribed an antibiotic/steroid eye ointment, to be applied twice a day for seven days. It cleared up almost immediately.

And if I hadn't waited so long the clear discharge wouldn't have turned into a disgusting brownish and crusty eye... but he also never scratched it or seemed itchy, and I just kept cleaning it w/some eye cleansing pads.

It could also be a little irritated from playing w/the water hose and getting her face right IN there... depending on what's added to your water, chemical-wise, and how sensitive she is.

She may be spending a bit more time outside...hmmm...

I have to get to the vet within the next couple days to pick up food for The Piss - maybe I'll ask them then what they think.

As long as the goop stays clear, she's probably fine. If it changes colour or gets *really* goopy, then you might want to bring her in.

You could always try flushing the eye out with a bit of sterile solution (the plain stuff for contacts, without all the extra cleaning/disinfecting junk) if you can get her to sit still for it -- don't risk jamming the bottle into her eye, LOL. Pull the bottom lid down to make a "pocket" and gently squirt the solution into the pocket. Then, let her blink and shake her head. Might/might not help.

The brown stuff under her eye is probably yeast starting to build up from the skin being constantly wet. Just wipe under her eye with a tissue or cotton ball (real cotton, not a polyester "cosmetic puff") a couple of times a day and it should clear up with no problem. The curse of white dogs and tear stains.

DO NOT apply any type of eye ointment until a vet looks at her eye. If the cornea or other part of her eye is scratched or damaged, a steroidal ointment will make the scratch worse.

If you resort to a vet visit (or call if you are there as much as I am), we just got some amazing antibiotic ointment for Trouble. She always has eye poop and red, bloodshot whites - we assume from allergies.

Picked up a teeny tiny tube of neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulphates and Dexamethasone Ophthalmic ointment. Twice a day for 10 days, and I can tell you after the first day it was a world of difference. Trouble has never had such bright, clear eyes.

FYI: dexamethasone is a steroid. There are formulations without the steroids as well.

yay steroids :) I know they are an "old school" drug, but with the right use, they are like little miracle workers!

Did you change her food? Eye discharge can also be because of food. Riggs gets nasty, gross eye boogers when we feed a lot of venison, they clear up when we go back to chicken. Adding in suppliments like Missing Link and/or Solid Gold Sea Meal can help clear up tearing as well, depending on the source of the problem.

Michelle,
Do you feed Missing Link on an ongoing basis or for specific issues? I just ordered the Wellness Blend for Trouble because I thought she needed the extra nutrients since she's on a limited ingredient home cooked diet.

I'm not Michelle, but - I add Missing Link to everyones food on a daily basis, and even allergic-to-everything -Faust has no issues w/it.

I think Trouble will enjoy it. :)

Hey Christine - thanks for the feedback. I didn't know anyone here was using it. Do you do the regular or the Wellness Blend. I chose the Wellness because it is completely vegetarian. Miss T has some beef allergies and there is beef liver in the regular.

And do you give a glucosamine supplement along with it? I had planned to keep up the glocosamine and fish oil she was already getting.

Oh, I should've specified... yup, Faust gets the vegetarian, the others are on the regular one. I add salmon oil and glucosamine (and a little garlic) for everyone as well, and we have no problems.

I know there is also a Missing Link that has added glucosamine, but Troubs is allergic to shell fish, right?
I haven't looked at the ingredients...

She is and it does, I checked it first. I'm happy with what I'm doing, it's pretty painless and she likes it, and hopefully it is giving her a boost.

Nope, she's been on TOTW for almost 2 months now, I think. It hasn't been as goopy today. I think she just wanted to make me stress out. :)

Jeez louise... it must be goopy eye week-- pretty much everyone at our house has it. We took the worst of the cats to the vet this morning while we were taking the old man in for his adequan shot. Neomycin eye drops (I didn't look to see if it's the steroid kind), clavamox, and an antihistimine. She's our very allergic to everything delicate baby.

I'm blaming it on the dogs rolling around in the dust and grass and bringing all those allergens into the house.

Here's hoping Inara's clears up nice and fast!
