Yes ma'am. There is definitely not a box stitch with an x. I'm not sure how much webbing extends into the harness. I could cut it open if you're truly curious. :)

It's frightening to realize how NOT safe that harness was. Thank god we never needed it for anything serious. The only bad thing that ever happened with her in the car was spinning out on ice and it was sufficient to keep her in place through that.

I'm going to send Noel an intact version of that harness. I won't be using it for my dogs anyway. She'll be able to dissect it as necessary to see how it was put together. When we were building equipment, we did a half inch fold over at the end to prevent pull out like that.

Holy cow!
I'm glad that Inara didn't take the opportunity to bolt. I can only imagine how your mind must have been racing when you heard that thing break and wondering what the heck had happened.

I like to use chains for my tethers. They are not breaking lol.

Hmmm I use four paws on my guys too and I agree with Noel and Bob..it appears they just stitched it into the seam allowance without a box stitch. I guess I better take a better look at mine and see what I need to do to retrofit.

Thanks for the pictures Liz.

I just looked at my four paws car harness for Scooter and I can tell you...crapola...the webbing is barely in the seam allowance, no fold over, no room for a box stitch at the stress points.

Seems I may be making some new harnesses.

Wow, that harness is toast! I am glad Inara is ok and did not hop the fence.

But they sell those Four Paws harnesses as car safety harnesses.... They sure do not look durable at all. I have one, I will have to go look at it.

I also have a Roadie dog car harness, I think that one is better made. I'll have to look for it as she is usually in her crate in the car.

I have a question...
Is this the same harness that held Inara when you went sliding around in the snow?

Yes, but that was remarkably smooth so I'm not sure if it was needed at all to hold Inara in place.

And still no response from Four Paws.

Four Paws responded:

Liz,
We are very sorry to hear about this conflict with our product. We actually reinforced those areas that you said were torn with an X-Pattern 2+ years ago so that is actually the older model. How old was this harness? Was it ever stored outside? If the harness did have a significant amount of time outside the materials will dry rot and break very easily. Don’t underestimate a 45 lb. dog because they are very strong! If you would like I can send you our standard nylon harness which works much better with tie-out cables. As I said before I apologize for any inconvenience and please let me no what you would like to do about this
matter.

Thanks,

Amanda Garcia

I bought two of them, I'm not sure which one that was, but the first one was bought in April, 2008:

No, it was NEVER stored outside. It was always in my car, you know me - if it wasn't always in my car would I ever be able to find it??? lol

It was purchased at CountryMax in the Rochester, NY area.

I would ask them for a new car harness to replace it. :|

I already told them I don't want a new car harness. I told her I'd take the regular harness. And I also said that I'm really anal about my dog stuff and would never leave any of it outside.

They don't seem to know anything about their products.
If the harness did have a significant amount of time outside the materials will dry rot and break very easily.

Nylon doesn't 'dry rot', it's compromised by exposure to UV (sunlight).

I have a $30 gift card to Petsmart and I think I really need to get Petie a harness for the car. I have a crate I have been putting her in, but it's really heavy and hard for me to move and it restricts my view out the back. Plus my boyfriend keeps storing stuff in it, so I have to unpack it to use it! :cuss:
Anyway, I was thinking about this one:
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.j ... 9&lmdn=Dog
or there is also this one:
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.j ... 4&lmdn=Dog
I didn't see Four Paws mentioned anywhere.
The reviews seem descent on both of them. From what the reviews it seems you just need to worry about getting the right size.
Anyone have any info or opinions on these?
