After much cajoling from a friend to try making a dog bed, I did. I made several and I even enjoyed it. They are now available for sale if anyone is interested.

I have a bit of variety now. There are some pillow style beds, box style beds (sized to fit in the standard wire crate sizes), round beds and a couple of mats. I'm adding more regularly.

The smallest rectangular ones I have listed right now is 11 by 17 inches and the largest rectangular ones are 29 by 47. I will be making an even larger one of 34 by 54 inches (Andre the giant size ). The rectangular ones range in price from $20-$100.

The sizes for the round ones range from 19 1/2" diameter up to 47 1/2" diameter and prices run from $30-$105.

All beds consist of a muslin insert which is stuffed with polyester fiberfill, and a prewashed, preshrunk fabric cover that is easily removed and is machine washer and dryer safe. The insert is also able to be sent through the washer and dryer--assuming you can fit the insert into a washer and/or dryer. You may have to visit a laundromat to wash the inserts from the giant ones.

If you'd like a bed in another size, please let me know. I enjoy custom requests and will do my best to make you and your pampered pet happy. If you already have a bed and just want a new, stylish cover, please contact me. If you have a great cover, but the insert has worn out, please contact me.

Ummm... I'm not so good at doing the "infomercial thing", so please check out my Etsy shop and if you like what you see, let me know. If you kinda like something and have ideas how to make it perfect for you (colors, themes, fabric, size) I'd love to work with you. Thanks!

Thank you. I am rather impressed with my one-time flash of creativity in naming something. :) Poor Andre would have been "BD" for Big Dog, if my husband hadn't suggested "Andre". And Amber came to us already named.

Our families were actually worried we were going to really name our son Cletus because they think we're awful at naming things.

And I'm glad you like the beds. :)

Would that be larger or smaller than an "Andre the Giant Bed"? And does Joyce have any color preferences? :|

Truman is my mutant Lab. He is 140 #. When he lays next to me, it is like a human stretched out. His doggie bed is a twin mattress. 8)

Awww. :) I love big dogs. Andre's just over 100 pounds and he's 11 months old. His bed is wherever he wants to sleep because he's spoiled.

Those look great!
I'm in need of a new dog bed. Seems my roommate's cat just couldn't help peeing on the one Dylan had. :rolleyes2:

Cat pee sucks. We have a cat who claims he couldn't find the litter pan. :puke: We finally ripped out our carpet and found beautiful wood floors under it. (Maybe he was just trying to convince us that the carpet was hideous)

That's why I'm hesitant to get Inara a nice bed again - I bought a super cushy one that she LOVED, and the cat (whose nickname is The Piss, for that very reason), peed on it. And it wasn't washable so I had to toss it. I was livid. Inara was sad. But now I'm hesitant to buy another super soft cushy one 'cause I'd have to kill the damn cat!

That's my concern too...I have beds for the dogs now, that are ALL washable...because I have a boarding cat that pees on stuff (I've thrown away numerous non-washable dog beds).

Well.... I have a couple ideas that might interest you.

All the current beds are machine washable (cover and insert both). I've seen some flannel backed vinyl (like picnic table covers that my grandma and mom used when we went camping). I can make a cover out of that so it's pee-resistant and then you can disinfect as you wish. You could still put a fabric cover over it as long as you can get the pee out of the fabric in the washing machine.

Also, I've started putting zippers on the inserts, so if your cat pees on it, you run it through the wash and it still stinks, you could just dump all the stuffing out and buy more from Walmart or any other craft store.

So it'd be a regular cotton insert stuffed w/ polyester fiberfill, with a flannel backed vinyl (or similar material, maybe raincoat stuff?) cover. If you don't like the looks of the vinyl, I can make a cover that goes OVER that. Kinda like a 'mattress pad' for your incontinent dog or dang cat.

My husband referred to Cuda as Mr. Pissy Pants for years. Now, they have a hate hate relationship and don't speak at all. ;)

I'm too slow to add to my previous post.

Here are some laminated fabrics. They have a thin film laminated to the face of the fabric making them suitable for shower curtains, raincoats, tablecloths, etc.

And some flannel-backed vinyl that showed up on a quick search.

Would that make the bed less breathable? I don't want something that would be hot...

Honestly, I don't know with those fabrics. I know I've slept on beds (cabin rentals at state parks) that have some sort of waterproof covering instead of the normal mattress cover material. And I don't recall being annoyed by trapped heat. I was more annoyed at the noise of the vinyl every time I rolled over.

I've also slept at my husband's grandmother's house and she's a germophobe so there's a sheet of plastic (like a thin shower curtain) between the mattress and the sheet.

Crib mattresses don't seem any warmer to me than my bed (just the noise again). *shrug*

Let me look into some more fabrics. I know fleece is water repellent, but I don't know if it'd work for someone peeing on it.

We have fleece blankies that we use as cuddle blankets on the couch. As long as you can get the liquid up within a reasonable amount of time (an hour or so) it won't soak through the fleece, many a spilled coke or found drinks spilled by the cats has taught me this. :)

The only problem with fleece and cat pee is that, in my experience, cats don't pee when you're watching them, so it'll still soak through. I saw some stuff about waterproofing canvas. I'm not sure if it'd need to be waterproofed every time it's laundered though. Once I'm done with this "job" that I get paid for, I'll do some more research. I suppose I'll have to order some of the different options and try it out.

If anyone has any ideas of fabric, or waterproofing methods, I'd love to hear about them and add them to my list of things to research.

Do you sell the covers by themselves, with no insert? One of my favorite beds is the MollyMutt duvet bed we have...it's got a liner than gets filled with old clothes, so everything is easily washed and the dogs love it because it smells like me. ;)

I do sell covers by themselves if anyone wants one. If you'd like a cover, but don't see one that you like, I'm happy to help find the perfect fabric. :)
