My first foster doggie!

Postby copperlegend » July 9th, 2010, 2:29 pm

This weekend, we'll be getting our first foster puppy via Pitty Love Rescue (thanks again, Jenn!). For those of you that have fostered before, do you have any tips?

I know the hardest part for me will be not getting attached to the puppy, but I am very excited to help it find the perfect forever home.

Once the puppy arrives, I'm sure I'll be adding to this thread, and taking lots of pictures :)

What dog are you fostering?

Fostering comes pretty naturally. The only thing I try to do is spend a little extra time working on basic house manners and obedience so once they get placed, things are easier on the dog and family.

I'm with Matt..lots of love, lots of patience, lots of structure. I try to make sure my fosters learn basic manners, housetraining and crate training. So when they are placed, they have a head start on being perfect for their new family.

Good luck, have fun and THANK YOU!!!

Oh boy. I smell permanent cuteness in the house.

She is so brave! She just walked right up to our princess of a cat, tail wagging like crazy. The cat sniffed her, then walked away. Nadia lost interest and went back to playing with her tug toy.

ok, whoever said she'd become a member of our household permanently, you all get a biscuit! She is just the sweetest thing, and we've decided to adopt her. We're going to continue fostering, to keep her socialized and to help out more pups!

My boyfriend is absolutely smitten with her. She LOVES to run up the steps on our deck, but the very bottom one is just a little too high so we pick her up and place her on it. During this morning's potty adventure, I noticed he put a plastic box at the bottom step which is just high enough to give her a little lift for that step! And, she knew to use it already! She's so smart!

I had a feeling she would be hard to give up. Hard not to get attached to the little boogers.

Congrats on the new addition. I would be a total failure as a foster - I'd be like the crazy hoarder lady they have on the evening news :crazy2:

Yeah...we're trying to avoid 'potato chip syndrome'. Can't have just one! But I think we're good with just the one for the next few years or so.

Nadia met her 'cousin', Nico, the Old English Bulldog. Nico is a gentle giant that belongs to our close friends.

This is why even though my boyfriend and I have a three dog agreement, my second dog will be a foster. So then I have room to "fail" and still be able to take in fosters for my third dog. Just hope I don't "fail" twice!!
BTW - I saw her on the Pittie Love site and she just looked like a little baby doll! I'm glad she is as sweet as she looks! Congratulations!!! :)
