Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

But the tablets can be compounded by a pharmacy to make a higher concentration if you think that would be to much to give. The down side is its more expensive that way, and you may have to go to a special pharmacy. Hope he's felling better!!

Thanks again. So far, only one puking episode early Sunday morning. But his appetite is excellent and he is just his regular self otherwise.

Oh Harley

If you go for getting in compounded, try and get it as concentrated as possible, believe me, it can be just as hard (if not occaisionally harder) to get liquids with a syringe into a dog as a pill; it all depends on the dog, the medication, and the medication giver ;)

Oiy. I never thought of HOW I was going to pour it down his throat.

I have found a "trick" that worked for one day so far. I put the pills in little balls of ID food. I also make balls of the OTHER canned food Darlene gets. Then I line them all up and start with the other three dogs, giving out the food. Harley is last on line, so by then, he is drooling and gobbles it down. Hopefully my new method will work for a few months. :)

I'd get the liquid compounded if he's hard to convince to swallow.
As long a you can squeeze it from a neddle-less syringe in a space between Harley's teeth, it gets in. Then, flush with some water and it gets swallowed, no choice. It's harder with dogs that shake their heads around, but at least once it's in the mouth, it can't be spat out like a pill.

And jus think how lucky you are not to have to pill a cat.

Oh, I tied it ONCE and it got ugly. VERY ugly.

I spoke to my Vet. He wants me to just keep with the pills for now, so I am doing what he said. (Especially since I didn't last time. )

Oiy. Again. :sad2:

Harley is now refusing to eat most foods. When he eats, most of the time it stays down. Every week I will find some partially digested food on the floor.

He is going in tomorrow to get weighed and so I can discuss it all with Vet. I did have a phone conversation with him, on Monday, and he wanted him to EAT or he would have to figure out what else could be the problem. I was instructed to make chicken breast and hamburger meat. I was to try each one (separately) on top of his dry food. Oh, and I have tried EVERY BRAND of dry and canned. From Nature's Variety, to Science Diet, to grain-free, to Natural Balance LID...you name it, I bought it.

Harley picks out the dry (even when moistened) and spits it on the floor, then eats the meat I added. Canned, he will eat once and then not want it again.

I am really beside myself now. :(

I try to give him lots of small meals a day. I know just chicken or hamburger isn't a balanced meal. He gets Reglan in the morning and pepcid 2 times a day.

Throw some ideas at me. :sad2:

Have you tried rotating the canned food...so he gets something different each day, for say...a week?

I don't really have any good ideas...but I'm thinking of you both.

Joyce, ifF he won't do raw, then try a "cooked meat", raw veggies, etc. with him. I guarantee he will love it! PM me if you'd like more info and a link.

I don't even get a chance to repeat a canned meal, because if I give him half a can at one meal, the next meal he refuses to eat it.

Are you seeing a specialist or a regular vet?

Does he seem nauseous at all around food? Licking his lips, lips pulled back a bit, squinty eyes... What meds is he on?

I just feel like it's an awful long time for him not to be eating well... You did blood tests and x-rays, right?

aw Joyce and Harley :(
I would try boiled chicken and rice - blended so he can't pick out the chicken. Or what about moistening the kibble and then blending all of it together?

Are you sure he just isn't getting picky now? How long has he gone refusing to eat before you offered him something different?

Has your vet mentioned a Barium xray series?

good thoughts...
