Trouble's Green Beans

This is where to talk about Pit Bulls!

Postby hugapitbull » June 10th, 2010, 1:33 pm

At Trouble's last vet visit (the evening prior to her surgery), Dr F decided we MUST take some weight off her. Well I had already made that decision and had been feeding her green beans as an evening snack for about 10 days. After her round of prednisone a while back (and the "I'm starving" routine that comes along with it) I started giving her the beans instead of another scoop of high calorie food. She soon became addicted (spoiled) and insisted on having a snack about 8PM each evening – would go to the kitchen and grumble.

Well, I switched to the reduced calorie Natural Balance on Saturday. She acted like I had cut her throat, grumbled for food for two days. In the evening she would not come to bed until she had her green beans. She would lay in the kitchen floor and whine and moan until I gave her more food AND her green beans.

By Sunday I had increased the food just a little with each meal, but still had her on the low side of the feeding recommendations. We had met a friend at the casino Sunday aftenoon, so I didn't make my normal grocery run. Got home about 7PM and fed the dogs. Both ate, all was well. Then Miss T decides she wants her snack. I ran in, checked the pantry and discovered I had no green beans. So I opened a can of carrots. She seemed to like that just fine, scarfed them right down. AND THEN – she thows herself in the floor like a brat and whines, pisses, and moans because she didn't get her beans. Would NOT come to bed. Laid in there by herself in the floor for about an hour. No amount of coaxing would get her to abandon the kitchen. I tried to take her out, I tried to distract her with play – NOTHING worked!

I finally turned every light in the house off and went to bed with her still in the kitchen groaning and whining. After about 10 minutes she hopped into the bedroom and flopped herself on the floor and went to sleep. Wouldn't even get in the bed. I guess she told me what she thought.

Now if any of you think you have a spoiled animal, compare it to this story and then reconsider. And the older she gets, the more vocal she gets about what she wants.

Oh, and I now buy green beans in the big restaurant size cans….for her highness

Okay, this might sound stupid... But... Regular french cut green beans from a can right or something else? How much and do you give the liquid? I never knew that was actually healthy! Hmmm... must know more and maybe I can talk my husband into letting me give them to Patch! Besides, I can eat a can by myself. Tell Miss T and Scooter both that I understand, I loooovvveee GB's too!

Stacy,
I drain them and give her about a cup. I started out putting about 10 morsels of kibble with it, but now she just gets the beans. The day I open the can she gets them at room temp right out of the pantry, after that they go in the refrigerator and she eats them cold. Duke eats some with her (not as many - maybe 1/2 - 3/4 c) he has to have a snack when she does. The vet tech told me some folks even give them frozen.

I use frozen green beans but normally thaw them out first. I find it's cheaper that way.

Hmmm, nice, so either way, their still healthy for them. I think I may have to try it. Just a side note and not to steal your thread... but... for the first time ever today, I asked the lady in the meat dept. about the marrow bones (I don't know WHY I felt like an idiot asking for some especially when she knew why I wanted it without me telling her) and she gave me one for $1.94. I've never give Patch anything raw like that before, but it IS okay to do it like that, right? Just trying new stuff all around.

Frozen green beans are probably a lot better than canned green beans: more nutrients, and a LOT less sodium! My dogs love green beans too.

I agree, there is way too much sodium in canned ones which can cause other issues.

You can buy unsalted canned green beans... that's what mine get when I don't have any frozen ones.

Thanks for the heads up on the sodium. I switched her to the frozen beans today. Had to put a few remaining of the canned beans on top. Coming out of the sack wasn't the same stuff to her as what comes out of the can. She wouldn't even get up to see what they were until she saw the can come out. Did I ever mention she was 'spoiled'?
