Can you use bug repellent that is made for humans on a dog?

I was trying to figure that out, too. I definitely wouldn't use one with Deet in it, but maybe a super gentle one made for babies?

Hmm, yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I found an all natural brand that Burts makes but I'm not sure how well it works.

Kayden and I are traveling to Minn. for a disc camp tomorrow and will be camping out for 5 days. I'm trying to find something I can put on myself and him as well in case the bugs are bad. He will be sleeping with me at night so I don't want to be covered in Deet when I climb into the sleeping bag with him

I know you can both use Avon Skin So Soft but I haven't had good luck with that. Some people swear by it though.

Oops, Liz... must've posted at the same time.
I used this for Mick in FL, where the skeeters are big enough to carry off a small baby... always worked for us. lol

And their coats will be so soft! :giggle:

You can order it or find an Avon kiosk at a local mall.

What we do is put the Skin-so-soft in a spray bottle with some water and it is easier to put on. Just spray and rub and you wont be SO oily. Just a little trick I have learned during my battle with the skeeters. :D

hmm... I don't have one to recommend, but I'd be up for checking out-to the best of my ability ;)- the content of a product if you find one you think will work

I stopped by the hippie store on my way home from work yesterday and found two kinds that are "all natural". The lady at the counter indicated they both worked really well. I guess Kayden and I will find out soon enough

The hippie stuff SUCKED. Kayden got eaten alive out there (as did I). I had to put him in the car after a few hours because his body was literally covered in welts from all of the bites

I got an all-natural one at the grocery store the other day...I haven't tried it yet. I hate *real* repellents...I go out during the middle of the day to walk dogs, but I shower first...I hate to have to shower again to get the smell off of me when I get home.

Hope mine works better than yours! :(

I think the stuff I bought would work for everyday use but for the deep woods it just doesn't cut it...

Sorry I didn't see this - I just use anything that is formulated for kids / babies on the dogs.

Dogs and cats are EXTREMELY sensitive to DEET, and most kids and baby bug repellents DO contain DEET (at lower concentrations than adult formulations, but it's still far too toxic for dogs and cats.)

You can buy dog insect sprays online--amazon is often cheapest.

When the biting bugs aren't too bad, I use Bite Blocker Organic Insect Repellent for Dogs (and I use the same stuff in a human formulation for me.) Castor oil, geranium oil, and soy oil are the main ingredients, and it works pretty well--much, much better than citronella spays.

When the bug season is terrible, I use the toxic but effective flys-off (available everywhere online).

Right now, I'm trying the topical k9 advantix, to see if it will work against ticks, deer flys, black flys, and mosquitos (ah, the great north woods!)
