Been awhile, but...

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby katiek0417 » May 24th, 2010, 9:03 pm

Hi all,

I know it's been a while...but I really need the power of PBT's good thoughts...

A few months back, Nemo tore his ACL. The vet concluded that it was only a partial tear, and because of his age and energy level, he wanted to be conservative. So, we did therapy. Unfortunately, Nemo didn't get better...

So, tomorrow, Nemo is going in for a TPLO. They will do it first thing in the morning so that they can gauge what he's like when he wakes up...if he gets crazy, he'll come home tomorrow night...

We are armed with very heavy sedatives at high doses, and there may something additional added for the first week...he will also be given stronger than normal antibiotics because of the history of pathogens in my house...

Anyway, for those who don't know, Nemo is my Czech import who was supposed to be my next PSA dog, and is also a working narcotics detection dog...

So, please keep your fingers crossed for us...we really, really need those good thoughts.

Hi Katrina! :wave2: I know you are a nervous wreck, but after it's over and Nemo is his old self again (assuming you WANT the "ol' dorky Nemo") 8) you can look back and sigh with relief.

Good thoughts and and prayers for you, and Nemo, to make it through with flying colors.

Did you have the option of them keeping him for a few days or would that stress him out even more?

That would be worse for him...they are keeping him heavily sedated right now, but he won't eat there (when I first got him he wouldn't eat for me for several days)...

However, I did just get an update...his surgery went well...turns out there was only a slight tear in the ACL...however, it was very stretched out (think rubber band that has lost its elasticity)...so, they went ahead with the TPLO. Post-surgical radiographs look excellent and Peter is very optimistic that his recovery will be 100%. So, I'm very happy...

I'll get to pick him up tomorrow...

So far so good...thank you for all the good thoughts...once again, they worked!

I'm with pocket pit :) The surgery is a hurdle for sure, but the trick is the recovery! Good thoughts :)

Yes,the surgery was definitely the easy part...I'm very worried about the recovery :sad2:

I'm in the process of trying to find out if there's another way I can work him...I would just do stuff in the house...but I need to find a reward that he won't get crazy for...the vet said working him is probably the ONLY way we're going to get him through this...

Well, I think we're going to do clicker for it...that way I mark the correct behavior without introducing the food reward during the behavior...
