Incontinence

Well, Inara has joined the club of the spay incontinent. She'd started leaking on her bed and mine, sometimes just a drop or two, sometimes a big puddle (fortunately those were on HER bed!). So I took a pee sample in tonight to the vet and they said she doesn't have an infection. I told the vet when it was happening and she said yep, spay incontinence. So Inara is now on 50mg of Proin nightly. Hopefully that'll do the trick for her.

My older dog has developed incontinence in the last few months. He does the same thing-- little dribbles in his sleep mostly, but occasionally big puddles.

We put him on a round of antibiotics for good measure, and then I started giving him an herbal bladder supplement. It's improved things tremendously. No more puddles at least. His issue may also be related to his arthritis-- when he was off Rimadyl for several days, before starting the supplement, is when we noticed the problem (could be pinched nerve due to spinal inflammation). It improved with the resumption of Rimadyl and the addition of the supplement. Who knows which one is doing the job. I wanted to avoid Proin considering his old age and the cost-- it's basically Dexatrim remarketed for vet use, and I don't trust his old heart to stand up to that. As my vet pointed out, it's wonderful that he's lived so long, but it's so hard to watch him get this old; he has CCD as well as the arthritis. I just wish I could find a less risky alternative to generic Rimadyl, too!

For spay incontinence, I've heard good things about natural hormonal replacement-- things like corn silk and soy can supply the extra estrogen that spayed dogs lack and that helps in bladder muscle control.

Hopefully the Proin will do the trick-- I've known of folks who've had great success with it; I just wanted to offer a few alternatives as back ups!!

I appreciate the alternatives - I got a bit nervous when I glanced at the bottle and it said that hyperactivity may occur while using it. I'll give it a try though. And it's only $10/month through my vet.

This gal I house sit for has her dog on something called Phyto B.

Here is what I found:

The woman is a surgical nurse and way into kind of natural stuff - I don't know how this compares to Proin but I just thought I'd mention it!

Proin is such a fantastic drug! Sophie was on 25 mgs a day, and she was a 100 lb dog. My vet told me that I could "play" with the dosage a little bit to try and get her on the least amount possible that still controlled her symptoms, so we started with 50 mgs and it ended up that 25 worked perfectly.

The only thing to be aware of is the effect of other meds on her bladder. Sophie also had allergies and twice she went on steroids to try to calm down a severe ear inflammation, and the steroids made her drink more, which made her bladder fuller, which made her start leaking again. So anytime she was on steroids we had to bump up to 75 mgs. Just something to be aware of!

Ruby goes through cycles of it. We mostly just monitor her water intake, especially when she is really tired. If she's exhausted, she leaks.

I've never had an issue with spay incontinence and had spayed females my entire life until I got Blazer (which started my preference for males). Weird.

We have great success with Proin at the clinic.

Daisy has "selective spay incontinence" when she's pissed off at one of us... it has manifested in one of my sneakers, the boys beds, the cat basket... once even on my pillow IN my bed.

I prefer me some boys too now.
