Sac

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Has anyone else seen or have/had their dogs sac still be around after they got neutered? We got Patch fixed when he was 6 or 7 months old and was around 60 or so pounds (yes, he's a big boy)... And he's now almost 2 1/2. It took him a little longer to heal than normal because we couldn't keep him from jumping and what not. Ever since then, he's always had part of his sac left... like, there's nothing in it and it's just skin now.

I had always wondered if something was wrong with him and when I asked the vet about it... They said it could just be because he grew so fast in the time he got fixed (he was gaining 5-10lbs a month when he was little) or could've possibly had a hernia at the time that 'fixed' itself because they said he's fine. They said if I wanted, they could go in and cut it out but that there's no point to it.

He's really the only dog I've ever seen that still has it after the fact. People are CONSTANTLY askin' if he's been fixed because of it. He's he just 'special' or is it kinda a normal thing to happen? If it's normal, anyone know why?

I've always seen neutered dogs with a little empty "coin purse" dangling after getting neutered. They don't cut the sac off, just the testicles out.

The dane I had has that, my boy kitty does too. It's like the previous poster said, they just take out the testicles and leave the scrotum be, so dogs whose testicles were fairly prominent before neutering will be left with a bigger and more noticeable coin purse than those who were neutered just after the testes descended.

Mick was like that... he got neutered at a little over a year old. I used to make him carry my change and the house keys in his "quite noticable" coin purse... lol

Connor is like that, the vet told us he'd have a little "potato chip" back there.

I can't imagine what Riggs' would look like if we got him snipped, it would flap around like a sail!

Degan has a little tiny bit of skin. He was fixed right at 5 months so his um...balls...didn't get too big but I always wondered why there was still skin left. I guess everybody heals differently!

We call it a "shrivel sac". My boys' are little since theirs were pretty small when they were neutered.

I think it really just depends how long the dog has their parts and how big their parts are.

Seth has a lil sac, he was neutered at 9mos and his testicles weren't huge, I've seen some dogs neutered at 12 weeks of age and they barely have anything there.

I've also seen a 12 year old basset hound get neutered and he lived like 2 years after the fact and his sac NEVER went away lol.

Reno has a lil bit of empty sac and Vinny did too. Not too bad.

Did you know they make prosthetic testicles for dogs? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9615545/ :giggle:

I don't about Patch, but I'm thinking Reno's self esteem is just fine without balls and it's two less things he has to lick!

Yes. I think that's just wrong LOL. We had a client who wanted us to put some nuticals in his dog and our vet refused LOL.

I used to train with someone who had that done. Her vet just wanted an excuse to try them, so he did them for free.

I'm seriously gonna ask them to do some *cosmetic* surgery when the Wiener gets neutered...he's got HUGE balls...and I don't need that shriveled sac hanging down between his shorty legs. :nono: He can barely make it over the flyball jumps as it is! :rolleyes2:

Lol, he's just fine, too. We used to call him "Big dog balls" all the time, because his were HUGE when he still had them. When we got him fixed... My husband tried to get me to ask the vet if we could keep his nuts in a jar :crazy2:

And so, you mean I have to tell him he isn't 'special' because a lot of dogs have them, still?! Uh oh.. He might not be TOO happy about that... I think I'll continue to let him think he is. *shhh*

Don't they have the prosthetic balls for humans, too?

Yup! I've seen many of them on CTs, men who have orchiectomies, usually for testicular cancer, get them.
