Residents try to save abused, abandoned dog

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

COBBLE HILL (WABC) -- A community has rallied together to try to save a badly abused pit bull found abandoned on Easter.

"As much as there's a feel good story now, there's a dark side. People let him get like this," Kenen Juska said

It is a hard look at that savage side of some people. A two month old pit bull mix was abused -- malnourished, dehydrated then tossed out of a car on Easter Sunday.

"When I looked at him I said what a beautiful set of eyes that dog has. As I got closer, I thought what is this dog doing alone and why does he have elephant feet? I could almost smell him from like 50 yards away. It was hard. I thought I can't take him to my apartment, but I said I can't abandon him either," Alex Darsey said.

Darsey found the puppy and named him Walter.

With the help of his friends, they rushed him to the Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group in Cobble Hill where doctors and staff brought Walter back from the brink of death.

"Walter was in really tough shape. He was severely neglected. He had a bad case of mange that caused him to lose a lot of protein," Dr. Brett Levetski said. "We're past the critical stage. He's eating and drinking on his own. And it's pretty playful."

As awful as his first few months of life have been, Walter loves people. He loves curing up into a ball on laps and falling asleep in the safety of their arms.

"From an isolated corner at 15th Street and 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn, Walter's story has hit the web: pictures, videos and rows of comments. There are several thousand people following his blog waiting for updates on his progress and pictures of his improvements."

"We thought it would be local, but it's become global. It was overnight the response we got," Ro Juska said.

The hope is Walter will head to his new home within a week, but he has a long road of treatment ahead because of the damage already done.

Someday I hope to live in a world where people don't treat pets (or each other) so horribly...

Thank goodness for the folks who found him and the ones who are treating his health issues!

This poor baby :( It looks like they got all they needed to cover his emergency care, thank goodness.

Our Ruby looked probably as baby as Walter when she came in. It's such a treatable condition, there is no reason to let an innocent puppy get like this. None
