I usually call my vet's office if I'm not sure. They're pretty good about asking for symptoms and then telling me to come right in, or wait until X happens.

(I'm not recommending this guy's cotton ball remedy--I have no idea if that's a good idea. I have used the pumpkin approach to moving stuff through. When my Tiva got a dangerous blockage, she was vomiting blood. But the vet listed some other signs as well.)
