"Down"

I send an info sheet to my clients...even pet-sitting clients. One of the multiple choice questions for pet-sitting clients is :does your dog know any of these commands: sit, down, stay, come.

They check yes or no...this just helps me when I come over, so I don't waste my breath if they don't really know anything.

She checked off "no" for "Down and added..."She still jumps".

:rolleyes2: *sigh*

I meant...does your dog lie down on command/cue. To me, down is lying down, to the most of the world I talk to, it seems that "DOWN" is to get the dog off of something (person, couch, etc)...which is why I have so much trouble getting their dogs to listen when I'm saying off. Personal pet peeve of mine...

I was saying that at first when we got Petie a few years ago. I hadn't had a dog in years. Saying "get down" when being jumped on seemed natural to me.
Now I remind myself, DOWN is LAY DOWN and OFF is get the heck OFF of me (or it)!

:D Honestly, you can say anything you want to get the dog to lie down...but you can't really use "down" for both behaviors, as some folks try to do. If you use "Down" as a "getofoffmenow!" command...then use a different word for lying down... :|

But seriously, if someone has a check list for behaviors/commands...would you really think that "get off that" is what was meant by down in the context of sit, down, etc.

maybe try using "lie down" instead on your checklist?

I couldn't help but laugh after reading her response Erin

I use down for them to lay down and off for them to get off something

I USED to use "down" for lie down and for off.

That is until the dog trainer decided to squirt me with a squirt gun filled with COLD water every time I used "down" in place of "off".

I'm not amazed that the woman uses down instead of "off" but seriously, you don't know what it really means in that context? lol

She's also the woman that keeps her two cats in a windowless room in the basement...so I'm not really surprised.
