Touche' Is A Busy Gal (New Therapy Dog)

This is where to talk about Pit Bulls!

Postby Patch O' Pits » March 16th, 2010, 6:34 pm

For those who didn't know Touche' tested for her certified on 2-15 and passed with flying colors, making her the newest member of my APBT therapy crew.

Her card and official papers came on March 4th, and she has been loving her new job. Touche' has already logged in several visits at the hospital. She is utterly thrilled with all the attention.

Thanks! She started working the day her card came and in less than a month has now wracked up right about 9 hrs of visitations. She's a good little girlie.

Apache is really retired but still occasionally comes out to work, I know she misses working more, but she will be 12 April 7th. She started working when she was right about a year old. Patcheeno, Steel, Bodacious and Touche' are all very actively working.

We have a great time and it so it is worth it to see people smile or know you comforted someone feeling stressed out of sad. The PR for the breed of course is also an added perk. The dogs seem to not be phased by anything we encounter and love going to work. After all, they are truly attention hogs LOL. It isn't only the clients but the families and even the doctors and nurses who also really enjoy seeing the dogs. LOL Steel has several "girlfriends" (nurses who look for him when he works)

When I was a little girl my aunt had melanoma and was in and out of the hospital. My mom would bring me and I got to play the piano for her and some of the other patients.
Not too many years after that I lost my mom to breast cancer when I was in high school. I saw how hard it was for people in the hospital especially if they didn't have friends or family close by who can visit.

I never really thought about doing any volunteer work again after that... Well, until I was at a obedience match with Apache about 11 years ago and they were offering the TDI testing. I honestly had never seen the testing or heard of the org before then. I watched them testing for quite awhile and right before they packed up I spoke to the evaluators who explained it to me. Apache did the test on the spot and past. So, that was how I started out with my first therapy dog...

It was really hard for me for awhile working on the oncology floor after losing Sock-M and then Starlit, but in away it also helped with me get over the sadness...

It is hard not to be happy being around the dogs. :)

Therese, when I first started with B&B, the training center I had certified through had their own rules and regulations and now I can't remember which were theirs and which were B&B's - does B&B require us to be escorted by a staff member for liability purposes? That seems to be why people don't like me & Inara coming more than once or twice, because it's a pain for them to dedicate a staff member to walk around with me. But if I don't have to do that that would help immensely in finding a place, I think.

Yes, they do, but call B&B and explain that there are staff present who are working close by, but that can't always be right in the same room with you. They will advise you whether or not the situation is OK.
