Uncomfortable topic?

This is where to talk about Pit Bulls!

Postby pitsnok » February 26th, 2010, 8:33 pm

So... I am not quite sure how to say this without feeling dirty, but here goes!

Sometimes Degan licks Harlow's...special place... And when he does this, his mouth always quivers... for about a minute afterward. He will sit up with his ears back, and sometimes it is just the front of his lips, just under his nose, and sometimes it is his whole jaw.

Anyone ever seen a dog do this, or have any idea why it happens?!? I'm not gonna lie, it is pretty hilarious, but so strange!

Both of my boys do this at times. Gator more than Dylan, but they will both get the mouth quivers when they sniff urine from a female dog. And if there is a female in-heat around then Gator just gets the mouth quivers (and crazy ADD brain) in general. My theory is that Gator does it more because he is intact. Dylan was also one year old when he was neutered so I don't know if that plays into him taking part in this behavior. I've never owned another dog that did this, but all my other dogs were fixed by 6 months of age.

I don't have a female dog so I don't know if they would do it after licking a female's "special place" but it seems to me that they probably would.

I don't know if that helps...

I think pit bulls have a sensory thing that involves that quivering and sometimes their teeth chatter with it. The first time I remember Vinny doing it, he had just stuck his nose in my special place :lookaround: , but I don't think I was in heat. :angel2:

Reno has done that quiver/chatter a few times too. I've never had another breed of dog that has done it though. It is funny and strange...

Horses and cats do it, too. :)

This is an interesting article on the Flehman Response. "The Vomeronasal Organ". Also read the section on "The Crouch Hound". 8)

Not a pit bull thing, just a dog thing...;)

Ripley does it, my old sheltie growing up used to do it at EVERY mailbox during our walks...and Fig sometimes does it. :)

I wonder why I never noticed it in any of my other dogs?

All of our males do it...they do it if they're excited, but also if there is a female coming into heat...

Now, I will say that our males that have been bred will ONLY do it now if a female is IN heat or COMING into heat (in fact, Jue is our best calendar for a female coming in b/c he starts chattering 4 weeks before, and starts drooling and chattering 2 weeks before)...

Our intact males that have not been bred chatter any time they smell female urine...

This just might be the most fun I have ever had reading a thread.
Hahaha, I am so glad to have gotten so many responses. And who would have known there is actually a name for it? You learn something every day!

Riggs does it when he sniffs pee, and he gets foam around the front of his mouth to add to the effect.

Patch does it sometimes, too. He's fixed and the only dog. I think it's cute when he does it though.

My boss had an intact female dog who would do it after licking herself when she was in heat. She still does it although she recently got spayed. I think intact dogs do it more than altered dogs.

It's one of the reason's I don't like dogs with nuts because they do it a lot and I think it is absolutely disgusting.

Degan hasn't had them for a very long time... and he still does this really often. sigh.
