Dentistry adventures for Jessie

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby call2arms » February 4th, 2010, 12:42 am

I brought Jessie in for a dentistry at work today, her teeth needed to be done even though I scale them at home often, plus I wanted a good hip x-ray under sedation.

Turns out her dead tooth doesn't need to be taken out (or at least hot yet), I'm so happy about that! I think she had hit her face on the doorframe trying to run past me in the spring last year, tought nothing of it and a few days later, her upper canine turned pink! Brought her to the dentitry specialist who used an electric current machine and confirmed that the tooth was dead, and proposed a root canal... Ugh, no. So I figured I'd x-ray the tooth yearly and monitor for any pain, swelling or nasal discharge, and luckily it seems just fine for now. Phew!

At some point as I cleaned her teeth I totally freaked out because her hard palate was soft and seemed to have air between the skin and the bone!! It really felt like it was inflated like a balloon... Apparently it's such uncommon thing, and not dangerous, the skin just kinds of lifts off the palate and somehow air gets in there... VERY WEIRD though. The vet had to look it up cause he'd never seen that before, he aspirated it and only air came out. Has anyone encountered that? The girs also plucked her tongue hairs, that's just gross.

She recovered quickly but had freaky bouts of reverse sneezing-like after I extubated her... We needed to hold her mouth open, and pull her tongue to help her out, and at somepoint she turned a bit blue... Not cool. But after a while with no stimulation and her eyes covered, she did ok. She's always a bag of surprises... Puffy palate, reverse sneezing... Gah.

Her hips are fine, but the vet manipulated her legs while she was under, and now she was limping outside earlier... He's proposing to do Cartrophen shots as needed, or to put her on J/D, but I don't plan on changing her food. I'm in total denial that my dog is getting older and needs stuff for hip/knee issues! I don't want to take that step, it just makes me realize that she's not as young as she used to be.

That was pretty much J's day, now she's pooped and sleeping in her chair, with glistening teeth and a balloon hard palate...

Good call on not switching the food, that food has less glucosamine in it than if you just gave supplements, kind of a marketing ploy.....

I'm sorry you had all that scary stuff happen, and glad she is okay. :)

Yeah... J/D had done miracles with a Dane according to a vet I know, but frankly I don't see much people buying it, or raving about it. I tried to give gluco/chondro supplements but it's not easy on J's digestive system. Plus, Acana Pacifica is the only food (with Orijen fish, but that was making her kidneys freak out a little bit, hence the switch to less protein) that doesn't give her mucousy poop, or runny poop. After a colitis, she was on Hypoallergenic HP, and on that she produced bunny balls, but with mucus on them.

I was soooo stressed out today, I didn't even plan on inducing/intubating/ her myself cause I don't want to be associated with "that stuff" for her, but I had to to speed up things cause the tech in surgery today was doing a dentistry at the same time and was running a bit behind. Thank god she was easy to knock down, I would have died right there if she wasn't breathing well or had low blood pressure or anything major. I'm sure my coworkers tought I was a bit neurotic. lol

Isn't there a law against family "operating" on family??? :?

I'm glad Jessie is alright, and you seem to handle things a lot better than I would... way to go! :D

Whew...what a day for both of you!

Glad she's doing well...and recovering from her adventure today!

Ripley's got two bad teeth that haven't needed to be pulled...they've been "half dead" for years now...I keep an eye on them, but so far, nothing needing attention. They're canines, so I feel lucky!

They have tongue hairs? :o  After working at a Hospital for 4 years, how did I not know that??

I'm glad she was ok and things are looking good. Oscar's first dental, he also had a Meibomian Gland Adenoma removed - and at that point we weren't sure what it was. It was all routine but I was a total idiot :rolleyes2: He was a champ through the whole thing and even with the Buster Collar and when the Histo came back clear with clear margins I breathed my final sigh of relief! And, normal looking eye to boot!

We do joint supplements but are saving the Cartrophen for if and when he gets more sore; I don't want to use up all my options for him yet!!
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

Quite a few dogs have hair on the little line on the middle of the tongue, or sometimes as little tufts on the tongue. It's REALLY gross - just eew. Jessie's were black, and way far back, you conld only see them when she yawned.

She's still a little out of it today, and whiny... Whining to go outside and pacing, whining for me to prepare her food, which she usually doesn't (she normally whines a bit when I put her food down, I wait for her to stop, and only then she can get up from her down and go eat)... Plus she's still limpy from her back right, I'll have to give sh*t to the vet for manhandling her yesterday (he's the youngest of the vets and we tease him a lot), and bring some supplements home, see how her poops are.

She counter surfed in the kitchen yesterday while I was outside of the room, and licked some A/D (super rich canned food!) and this morning she had weird poop, semi constipated, semi soft and yellowish. Good thing she doesn't counter surf at home, I think the cat food was just too yummy to resist!
