Weight Pulling Questions

Weight pull, Protection, Agility, Flyball... you name it!

Postby melgrj7 » December 30th, 2009, 8:37 pm

I've read some old threads on here which have been very helpful. I just have a couple of questions . . . where do I get a harness from? And my other question is, there is snow outside, is it ok to train on snow? The other option is the basement, which is quite big. Its definitely long enough, but is it ok to train on cement? One more question, Lloyd, my mutt who I want to try this out with has a pretty narrow chest, will that cause any problems?

Thanks!

Snow is perfectly fine. They hold pulls in snow but usually just the huskies show up (our short coat fat heads aren't too big on the cold weather). My Lab has a pencil chest  and pulls for exercise

How big is Lloyd? There are a few of us in Rochester with harnesses but they are custom made for the dog.

Kayden is around 50 lbs so his harness won't fit but I'm ordering a new one for Earl (Karma chewed the old one). Earl is around 70lbs so he will probably fit your boy. I can meet up with you guys and loan you Earl's harness to see if your guy likes it. Since the harnesses are custom made they run around $60 so there is no point in buying one until you know if it is something you will like.

That would be awesome. I'm not sure if Lloyd will get it at first, but he usually likes anything I want him to like once he does "get it".

Most dogs will enjoy it if you start them off right and keep things really positive. There is also a really good training in Syracuse (Lisa) who has fun pulls and practices each month http://www.canineculturecny.com/Weightpullclub.html

If you got some short pile carpet you could make a run in your basement too.
Good luck and have fun!

Cool, thanks I could do that! So what is the best place to order a harness from?

This is where I got mine from: http://www.weightpullharness.com/Home.html
I am really pleased with the way the harness fits my dog and with the customer service.

I'll second the vote for Missy Villines' harnesses. I've got 2 from her.

There are 3 UKC clubs that have weight pull listed under them. The closet one is about 4.5 hours from you. If I were you I would contact all of them and see if they know of anyone in your area that pulls.

http://www.ukcdogs.com/Clubs.nsf/ClubViewDE?Open&Type=W

I can also try to dig up the contact for your region for IWPA to see if they know of anyone in your area. You really just need some one on one direction with someone and from there you can do most of the training yourself.
