WTF?

For the 2nd time in about 2 weeks, Inara peed on my bed tonight. I don't have time to do laundry before going to bed, so now we're down to flannel sheets and one blanket in a cold house. Guess I'm sleeping in sweats.

But seriously, what the hell is going on? She was the easiest puppy in the world to housebreak, and except for one week when she was about 8 months old and her brain had fallen out, she hasn't had an accident, and now twice in as many weeks? The only thing I can think is that tonight she was running around like a madwoman, beating herself to death with a new toy - maybe it worked her bladder up? But why would she pee on my bed instead of by the front door? Or even just on the floor? I was concerned the first time she did it, hoping she wasn't getting sick. Now I'm getting annoyed.

Thoughts?

maybe a bladder infection

both ava and lulu both had infections!! we were finding pee in the bed at least twice a week, but only the bed it was strange. Thank god for waterproof mattress covers! There was 1 night it happened while we were sleeping and i woke up to pee next to me, put a towel on it and went back to sleep :oops:

if it keeps up take her to the vet!

I second the bladder infection, or even an allergic reaction. My basset hound did this once, a GINORMOUS puddle of pee on my feet, while I was sleeping in bed. Turned out, she was allergic to a medication the vet gave her for allergies.

yeah, intentional vs. not is a big factor... maybe she was napping and had an accident?

could also be spay incontinence, which is easy to fix, just a little hormone pill...

I was not in the room when it happened, so I can't say for sure, but it was way too much pee to just be leaking a little. And she's not on any medication, and nothing in the house has changed (except for a flea bath 2 weeks ago?) so I can't imagine it's allergies. Both times have been up by my pillows, which is where she normally sleeps.

I know she's not doing it out of spite, and I haven't yelled at her for it. The first time I was really worried because that's not like her, last night I was a bit perturbed and sighed and huffed a lot (I was really cranky about having a chilly night) - she just sat beside me with her head drooping, looking really pitiful.

She goes to the vet on Monday to be boarded for a week ( :cry:

) so I'll ask them to give her a once over while she's there.

I'm not a dog expert by any means, but it seems to me she is trying to get your attention regarding something that is bothering her. Vinny peed on my bed one time when he was around 1- 1/2 years old. He and I came to a quick understanding about the inappropriateness of what he did. Is there a new person hanging around your place lately? Have you gotten new pillows or changed anything in the bedroom?

Bladder infection is definitely a possibility too.

Nope, definitely no new people. My schedule hasn't changed. If she was doing it right in front of me proudly then I might think she's just trying to be a bitch, but she's not.

I always thought spay incontinence was just a dribble. I'm assuming there's a test the vet can run to check for a bladder infection/UTI? How do they know if it's spay incontinence?

Generally they rule out all the other stuff and then if it's still a problem will try some meds for the incontinence.

well Jeanine got the second part, but if she's sleeping I'd imagine it could dribble into a fair size puddle before she noticed.

I vote for bladder infection. You may need to test twice. It's not uncommon to miss it on the first test and find it on the second try. Good luck!

Our old girl, Samantha, had spay incontinence and she would sometimes leave HUGE soaking puddles on her bed. Other times she would just sit down and leave a little dribble when she got up. Same with my brother's dog, Molly.

Samantha was on DES for years and did very well with the incontinence issues. Molly is on Proin (pro-in) and has also done quite well.

If it's a bladder infection, generally the first testing for it will catch it, depending on the test used. Even if she shows as negative, it might not be a bad idea to go for one round of antibiotics and see if the piddling stops. If it doesn't stop, then she probably will end up on a trial for spay incontinence. If THAT doesn't work, then it's probably behavioural, but in my experience that's been pretty rare.

Thanks all. I really would be surprised for it to be behavioral, because she's just not that kind of dog. I'm telling you, as a puppy, she had maybe 5 accidents inside? And then a couple when her brain fell out during adolescence. But nothing in years.

Since one of my friends is dropping Inara off at the vet for me, I've typed up a list of directions (feeding amounts, times, emergency contact #'s, etc) and I've also written on there to ask them to test her for a UTI or bladder infection, and explained why. I assume they just test her pee for that?

Yes, a urinalysis should help you determine if there is something to be concerned about. :wink:

In addition to a UTI or spay incontinence, there can be other things that a urine sample can rule out (crystals in the urine, abnormal cells, protein, etc). :dance:

I have also had some patients that will have what is called overflow incontinence. That is when they, presumably, drink a lot of water just before bed time. Their bladders get so full, and they just can't hold it in. It is different that spay incontinence in that with the "spay incontinence", the sphincter just needs a little more hormone to keep working. In overflow incontinence, it is NOT a hormonal problem so much as a "I drank too much water before I went nighty night" problem. :oops:

I would start with a urinalysis and go from there, as everyone suggested.
