Do they look too skinny?

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby amazincc » December 1st, 2009, 6:42 pm

For the third time in so many weeks someone has made a comment about my dogs looking "too skinny"... and a little old lady even added :"... especially the poor puppy..." today.

Faust eats almost FIVE cups of low-allergen kibble a day! He's 65 pounds/8 months old.
Sepp gets 1 1/2 pounds of RAW... 77 pounds/18 months old.
It's true - when they run and play tug, you can see the outline of their ribs and muscles, but I thought they were both at a good weight. :?

The best I could get were side pics... it was too nice out for anyone to stand still for any amount of time. lol

Should I up their food???
They are both very active dogs when we go outside, but they don't mind hanging out on the couch either.

Ummm...honestly, these are the first pics of these two where I haven't though..."gee, they're rather plump."

They look great! :cheer: I like seeing ribs and muscles!

This is from too many people that make their dogs fat! Look at some AKC shows now even! They're dogs are too chubby to run an agility course! More than 80% of our dogs at the vets office are over weight, I hear it all the time about my dogs too. The only good word I got was from my orthopedic veterinarian that said my dogs look great and wish more dogs looked like that!

I think yours are in great condition!

From my vet:

"If 50% of people who meet your dogs think they're too skinny then they're probably the perfect weight!"

Most people have overweight if not obese dogs....

Nope. They look just about perfect. Don't change a thing. It's healthier to err on the side of a couple of pounds underweight than a couple of pounds overweight anyhow.

Beautiful!

They look perfect to me! If they were "to skinny" their back bones and every single rib would be showing. Don't do anything different. Some people don't know what healthy looks like.

They look good to me :|

Next time you have them at the Vet, ask point blank, then when the Dr. tells you your dogs are a good weight you can relay that to the nosy folks!
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

Except so many vets can't judge good weight either...I hear that all of the time..."but the vet says they're fine!!!"

Christine, everyone thinks puppies should be fat and rolly polly...even at 8 months. I get that with Doogie all the time. Both dogs look great...(shh don't tell Scooter is back on a diet - even more so now after seeing the pics).

A lot of vets are hesitant to tell clients their pets are obese because they can easily lose clients that way. :|
