The spirit of giving

Postby LMM » November 29th, 2009, 4:22 pm

Since the season is upon us......

I have one shelter located in Kentucky that I work with almost exclusively. I truly love this shelter! It's run by 6 part-time volunteers and they operate mainly out of their own pockets. In return, they survive on the kindness of donations to continue to get things done. They really go above and beyond for their animals. This isn't a shelter where their volunteers come by daily just to feed, water, and clean their cages. These people spend as much time showing these animals love as their lives allow. The take pictures, they take videos, they foster, they even make monthly trips (free of charge at that!) from Kentucky to the NY area and beyond to get their animals safe. While I know there are great shelters out there, I wish all shelters were this committed.

So every year I send them a big Christmas box. I went shopping this weekend and SCORE! I have racked up some treats, toys, collars, and leashes. I'm not done, I want to get a few more things and then I want to get some yummy flavored coffee to add to the box (or boxes at this point :rolleyes2: ) strictly for the volunteers because I think they deserve treats as well.

The loot! I had to pile everything together in order to get it all in the picture so some stuff is buried lol

Does anyone else here do stuff like this? I mean I donate all year round and do what I can but something about this season brings out the Santa in me!

I've decided that I'm going to start dropping off bags of food at a place that collects food for the pets of homeless people. http://www.petsofhomeless.org/

I'm going to aim to do it monthly - it won't be high-quality food, and it won't be tons of bags, but every little bit will help. :)

VERY NICE, JENN!!! :hug3:

Liz, thanks for that link. While the pictures made me cry, I now have a new mission. I will be sending food into Brooklyn with my son (he works there).

Nice job Jenn. Most shelters are thrilled and touched by the generosity of their friends, neighbors and strangers. Every little bit helps because as you know, animals are usually way down the list of things to be funded by other than committed individuals.
